Vikings' Audie Cole: Re-signs for one season

Cole (ankle) signed a one-year contract to stay with the Vikings, FOX Sports North reports. Cole had just three tackles in seven games during the 2015 season, but he did start in Week 9 against the Rams in place of an injured Eric Kendricks. Cole broke his ankle during that game, ending his season prematurely. His biggest 2016 impact may come on special teams.

Vikings' Audie Cole: Lands on IR

Cole was placed on the season-ending injured reserve list Tuesday after breaking his ankle during Sunday's contest. Cole got the start at middle linebacker with Eric Kendricks (ribs) ruled out prior to Sunday's game and the 26-year-old recorded two solo tackles before breaking his ankle. Jason Trusnik will take his place on the roster and provide depth at linebacker, but it remains to be seen who might start for the Vikings if Kendricks is held out of the lineup another week.

Vikings' Audie Cole: Suffers broken ankle

Cole suffered a broken ankle during Sunday's win against the Rams. Getting the nod at middle linebacker with Eric Kendricks (ribs) sidelined, Cole recorded two solo tackles before a teammate rolled up on the back of his leg. He needed a cart to get off the field, indicating the severity, and head coach Mike Zimmer confirmed the diagnosis in a post-game media session. While such an injury is almost certainly season-ending, the Vikings will update Cole's status accordingly in the coming days.

Vikings' Audie Cole: Active and starting Sunday

Cole (finger) is active and will start Sunday's game against the Rams, Ben Goessling of reports. With Eric Kendricks sitting out due to a rib injury, Cole is the next man up at middle linebacker, which could yield fruit against a run-heavy offense. On the season, though, Cole has just one solo tackle and a fumble recovery, as he's been limited to special-teams duty.

Vikings' Zimmer calls Gerald Hodges' performance Week 1 'average'

Vikings linebacker Gerald Hodges started at middle linebacker in Monday's loss to San Francisco and had eight total tackles. However, head coach Mike Zimmer wasn't happy with his performance, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. "Average. At best," Zimmer said about all three of his starting linebackers. Hodges won the job over Eric Kendricks and Audie Cole. Kendricks played just 10 snaps compared to Hodges' 63, while Cole didn't play on defense. Zimmer was also down on Kendricks' performance, so it looks like Hodges will get another week as the starter. Kendricks, a 2015 second-round draft pick, should take over the job eventually this season.

Gerald Hodges could end up as Vikings' starting middle linebacker

Gerald Hodges will start at middle linebacker for the Vikings during Saturday's preseason game against the Cowboys and if all goes well, he could keep the job to start the regular season, according to Audie Cole started the first two preseason games at middle linebacker, but coach Mike Zimmer opted for the change after watching film of all the linebacker candidates. "He's looked good," Zimmer said of Hodges. "The first week, it was more learning, because it's different alignments (than playing outside linebacker). He wasn't perfect with all that stuff. But when he's played, he's done good."

Vikes still undecided at middle linebacker

The Vikings' middle linebacker job remains up in the air between Jasper Brinkley and Audie Cole, reports "Jasper seems to be a little more communicative, and Audie seems to have a little more range," coach Mike Zimmer said. "As far as the running game, they're very close and the passing game they're similar."
