Raiders' Aldon Smith: Suspended for one year

Smith has been suspended for one year as a result of his role in an incident on Aug. 28, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. While the specifics in the incident are unknown, Smith's ban relates to substance abuse, according to Ed Werder of ESPN. Considering Smith was suspended for the first nine games of the 2014 campaign, the Raiders will likely search elsewhere for pass-rushing help in the offseason, but Ray-Ray Armstrong is the logical candidate to take over at strong-side linebacker in the interim.

49ers GM Trent Baalke: Team wants to keep Davis, Smith

The 49ers have the intent to try and keep tight end Vernon Davis and linebacker Aldon Smith, according to 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said that the team's future is one where both Davis and Smith are cornerstones of the franchise. Smith, who has had conduct issues in the past, is still perceived as a key player on the team and Baalke wants him around for the long run. "He's in his contract year," he said. "He's poised to have a very good year. We expect him to have a very good year. I think he expects himself to have a very good year. We're going to work hard to make sure that he remains here." Davis, who the 49ers drafted in the first round back in 2006, will likely retired in San Francisco if the team keeps him around after his current contract. "We're always going to try to keep our own. Sometimes it works. As you've seen, sometimes it doesn't," Baalke said. "But Vernon and I have had conversations, and we'll leave it at that. He understands where we are, and we certainly understand where he is."

"Really just getting into the optimal shape I want to be in," Smith said. "I want to come in and make sure I'm ready to go." The strong offseason performance comes on the heels of a 2014 season in which Smith posted a career-low two sacks in seven games of action. "I don't think I played to my level, and I want to do everything it takes to play consistently at my level," Smith said. "I know that when I'm playing consistently and I'm on my game, I can't be stopped."
