Cardinals GM: Kevin Minter has 'to step up his game'

Cardinals general manager Steve Keim said Wedneday that the team "needs to address" the linebacker position in this year's draft, adding that 2013 second-round pick Kevin Minter has to elevate his game, The Times-Picayune reports. "We drafted Kevin Minter in the second round a few years back and we have high expectations for Kevin," Keim said Wednesday. "But he's got to step up his game. There are two types of linebackers. There are the mike linebackers, the heavy-legged guys, the more downhill thumper types. Then you have the more athletic, will linebacker types who can run and cover and may not be as physical at the point of attack. Those are two necessary positions for us that we need to address." Minter recorded 45 tackles in 2014 while making five starts in his 16 appearances. Coach Bruce Arians also addressed the linebacker Thursday, saying that the team needs to "continue to develop Kevin Minter into a better player."

Cardinals DST carries more risk than last year

The Cardinals DST finished sixth in Fantasy points last season while ranking first against the run. This is not that defense. Arizona lost defensive tackle Darnell Dockett (torn ACL) and linebackers Karlos Dansby (free agency) and Daryl Washington (suspension), among others. That trio accounted for 14 sacks, six interceptions, two touchdowns and a fumble recovery. Linebacker John Abraham (11.5 sacks) reported late to camp following a DUI arrest and at age 36 is unlikely to repeat his 2013 production. The Cardinals are counting on 34-year-old Larry Foote and unproven Kevin Minter at linebacker. Safety Tyrann Mathieu (knee) is not 100 percent yet. Arizona did add corner Antonio Cromartie to team with superstar Patrick Peterson. Monday night, Arizona hosts an efficient Chargers' team that gave up the eighth-fewest Fantasy points (7.3 per game) to DSTs last year. Consider the Cardinals DST a low-end starting option at best.

Kevin Minter has big shoes to fill

With inside linebacker Karlos Dansby leaving Arizona for Cleveland, the Cardinals are counting on 2013 second-round pick Kevin Minter to fill his spot. Minter played special teams last year and got in for only one defensive snap. "He doesn't need to be Karlos," defensive coordinator Todd Bowles told the team's website. "He needs to be Kevin." Minter has a reputation as a run stuffer, and coaches are confident he'll acquit himself well, if not fully compensate for Dansby's loss. Minter said he learned a lot from Dansby, who had 122 tackles, 6.5 sacks and 19 pass breakups last season. "It was a little bit frustrating last year, but at the same time, you couldn't help but learn," Minter said. "Karlos treated it like a business. He came to work every day to work, whether it was eating the right things, watching film, doing extra workouts. He was a great role model. With what he left, I feel like I can pick up the slack."

Kevin Minter to elevate to Cards' starting lineup

In the wake of losing Karlos Dansby to the Browns via free agency, the Cardinals are expected to give second-year linebacker Kevin Minter the first crack at starting as an inside linebacker in 2014. Bruce Arians said as much on Wednesday according to the official team website. Minter made just four tackles last season over 13 games, basically relegated to special-teams reps.
