DeJon Gomes exits game with neck injury

Lions defensive back DeJon Gomes left Friday's preseason game against Oakland with a neck injury, according to the team's official website. Gomes forced a fumble on a huge hit late in the fourth quarter, which caused the injury. He was taken back to the locker room and ruled out for the remainder of the game.

  • Redskins name Gomes starter

News: Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett surprised everyone Thursday by saying rookie DeJon Gomes will start the rest of the season at strong safety. Current starter LaRon Landry has been hampered by groin and Achilles' problems.
Analysis: Gomes had 14 tackles a few weeks ago against the Cowboys and totaled five tackles last week against the Patriots, so clearly Washington is confident in his play. Gomes has a chance to make a lot of plays at strong safety, so he could be a sleeper Fantasy DB the rest of the season.
  • Gomes hurts right knee Week 13

News: Washington DB DeJon Gomes injured his right knee on Sunday in a Week 13 loss to the Jets. Gomes left the game and could not return for Washington. Gomes finished with one tackle.
Analysis: Gomes, a rookie from Nebraska, has had a couple good games this season filling in for various injured members of the secondary. Otherwise, he's just a low-end option in Fantasy IDP formats, when healthy.
  • Gomes has big tackle game

News: Washington DB DeJon Gomes was needed with the Redskins secondary banged up for the Week 11 loss to the Cowboys. Gomes came up big with 13 tackles in the overtime defeat. Six of Gomes' 13 tackles were solo.
Analysis: Gomes had four tackles on the season entering the Week 11 game. He saw more playing time with LaRon Landry out. The Redskins hope that doesn't continue, so Fantasy owners can leave Gomes on waivers.
  • Gomes suffers hamstring injury

News: Washington defensive back DeJon Gomes suffered a hamstring injury during the Week 2 win over Arizona. He finished with one tackle before leaving the game.
Analysis: Gomes was only playing in the game due to injuries to other defensive backs for Washington. He has no Fantasy value in IDP leagues heading into Week 3 at Dallas.
  • Redskins bulk up defense

News: The Redskins used many of their acquired draft picks in the 2011 draft to add talent to the defense. After taking Ryan Kerrigan in Round 1, the Redskins selected Clemson DT Jarvis Jenkins (Round 2), Nebraska safety DeJon Gomes (Round 5), Boise State CB Brandyn Thompson (Round 7), Florida State DE Markus White (Round 7) and West Virginia DT Chris Neild (Round 7).
Analysis: The Redskins made it clear this offseason that they want competition for their starting spots. However, some of these players will be behind the likes of Brian Orakpo, DeAngelo Hall and LaRon Landry on the depth chart. Aside from Kerrigan, we wouldn't recommend spending a draft pick on any of these Redskins rookies in Fantasy play.
