Bengals LB Vontaze Burfict works out gingerly Tuesday

Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict was certainly not a full-go Tuesday in his first action since going on injured reserve last December and undergoing microfracture surgery the following month. He did, however work out on a side field, which is encouraging in itself. But he should not be expected to join his teammates any time soon. "Vontaze will be in rehab all the way through the summer," Marvin Lewis told the Cincinnati Enquirer. "So, he's got a long way to go. He had surgery in January. That's surgery that takes a bit." Burfict could not run. Rather, he limped moving across the practice field.

Bengals' Vontaze Burfict may start year on PUP

Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict's rehab may not be progressing as quickly as the team had hoped. Burfict had microfracture knee surgery and initial post-surgery reports said that he could be recovered by the start of training camp. This week, the team's website said that Burfict's status was "up in the air" and that a return by the start of the season would be a "tight call". If Burfict isn't ready by the opener, the Bengals may choose to put him on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

Bengals LB Vontaze Burfict no lock for start of season

Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict, who's had two knee surgeries since late October, might not be ready for the start of the 2015 season, reports the team's website. The plan is for Burfict to be back, but "there has been some concern" he'll start the season on the PUP list and miss the first six weeks, the report said. "He has to work his tail off. He has to work harder now than he did to get here," coach Marvin Lewis said. "Everyone in his inner circle has continued to reinforce that. He has to work harder now than he did to get here." Burfict had 29 tackles and a forced fumble in five games this season. He had 298 combined tackles and four sacks in the previous two years.

Lewis: Bengals LB Vontaze Burfict could need more surgery

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said Wednesday that linebacker Vontaze Burfict, who was placed on injured reserve Tuesday after undergoing knee surgery on Oct. 29 and failing to recover enough to take the field, could require additional surgery before going into recovery mode, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. "He's heard from a lot of different people (their) recommendations, and then he's going to have to make a decision on what's best to go forward," Lewis said. The coach added that Burfict is expected to make a decision on whether to undergo further surgery in the next few days. The linebacker isn't a lock to be ready for the start of next season.
