    Steelers' Jarvis Jones, James Harrison in 'open competition' for ROLB job

    Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert wants to see the starting right outside linebacker earn the job this fall, reports the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. With veteran James Harrison re-signing with the team, he and second-year linebacker Jarvis Jones will be in an "open competition" for the job. Jones was hampered by injuries in his rookie season, limiting him to just seven games, totaling 18 tackles and two sacks. Harrison signed with Pittsburgh midway through 2014, totaling 45 tackles with 5 1/2 sacks in 11 games.

    Steelers activate Jarvis Jones from IR, place Cortez Allen on IR

    While the Steelers were able to activate linebacker Jarvis Jones form short-term IR, they had to place cornerback Cortez Allen on IR in order to accommodate Jones on the 53-man roster. Jones played in three games before he suffered a wrist injury and was then placed on short-term IR. Allen (thumb) was listed as probable heading into Week 14 against Cincinnati.

Linebackers coach Keith Butler is cautiously optimistic. "I hope he can [return], but we'll see," Butler told ESPN. "A linebacker's got to be able to use his hands. Linebacker Jarvis Jones likely needs wrist surgery after getting hurt Sunday and will be sidelined indefinitely. Cornerback Ike Taylor could also miss some time after suffering a broken arm against Carolina.

    Steelers DST scores in Week 3 rout

    The Steelers DST enjoyed itself Sunday night in Carolina, producing three sacks, two turnovers and a touchdown in a 37-19 win. The biggest play came early in the fourth quarter when the Panthers' Philly Brown fumbled on a punt return and safety Robert Golden recovered in the end zone. It was one of two fumble recoveries for Pittsburgh, which got a sack-fumble from outside linebacker Jarvis Jones. Linebacker Arthur Moats and nose tackle Steve McLendon also sacked Cam Newton. Pittsburgh allowed just 42 rushing yards in what was easily its top defensive performance this year. The Steelers DST has a chance to dominate again Week 4 against the lowly Buccaneers.
