Panthers' Brenton Bersin: Catches one pass in Thursday's win

Bersin caught one of two targets for 12 yards in Thursday's win over the Cowboys. Despite his standing as the Panthers' fourth receiver on the depth chart for Thursday's game, Bersin actually saw more targets (two) than lead wideout Ted Ginn (zero). Still, Bersin's main role with the club lies on special teams, and he shouldn't be expected to record much more than a stray catch in any given week. For the season, he has only six receptions for 82 yards.

Panthers WR Brenton Bersin leads team in receiving Sunday

Panthers wide receiver Brenton Bersin led the Panthers with four receptions (on four targets) for 54 yards in Sunday's win over the Buccaneers. Bersin made the most of an opportunity to impress with fellow wideouts Jerricho Cotchery (ankle) and Kevin Norwood inactive Sunday. In fact, with 54 receiving yards, including a long gain of 30 yards, Bersin set a new career-high for himself. While that evidences Bersin's underwhelming upside, he'll surely be pleased with his team-leading performance Sunday.

WR Brenton Bersin still in the mix for Panthers

Wide receiver Brenton Bersin was a pleasant surprise for the Panthers last season, but he will face some tougher competition to stick on the roster this year, per Berson nabbed 13 of 20 targets for 151 yards and a touchdown last season, but struggled on special teams, where his muffed punt in a playoff loss to the Cardinals was one of the key plays. This year, the Panthers have upgraded their talent at wide receiver, meaning Bersin could be the odd man out despite a good rapport with QB Cam Newton. "Every year you've got to make plays if you want to make the team," Bersin said. "I did it last year in camp and in the preseason. I've got to continue it this year."

With Philly Brown sidelined, Stephen Hill might get a shot

With undrafted rookie wideout Philly Brown (shoulder) unable to practice for the second straight day Wednesday, the Panthers might promote wideout Stephen Hill from their practice squad for Saturday's divisional playoff game at Seattle, reports Carolina also is looking at third-string quarterback Joe Webb, who has moved back to receiver, the report said. Brenton Bersin continued to work as the No. 3 receiver in Wednesday's practice. However, he lacks the elite speed Brown brings, the report said. Hill made 45 catches for 594 yards and four touchdowns in two seasons with the Jets. Carolina is an 11-point underdog.

Panthers WR Philly Brown (shoulder) works on the side

Panthers receiver Philly Brown, who hurt his shoulder in the Wild Card win over the Cardinals, worked with trainers on the side at practice Tuesday and is progressing, coach Ron Rivera told reporters. If Brown, the team's No. 3 receiver, can't play Saturday against the Seahawks, Brenton Bersin will fill his role. Carolina is an 11-point road underdog in the divisional playoff game.

Many Panthers pitch in with snags to Week 14 victory

Seven Panthers caught three passes or less, though that was certainly enough for them to chip in to a blowout defeat of host New Orleans on Sunday. The most significant made by one of the minor characters was that of running back Fozzy Whittaker, who helped his team pile on with a 26-yard touchdown catch and run late in the third quarter. Also pitching in from the air were Philly Brown (3-42), Mike Tolbert (2-34), Ed Dickson (1-10), Jerricho Cotchery (1-9) and Brenton Bersin (1-9). Tolbert contributed 28 yards on five carries as well.
