Plan is for Bills LB Ty Powell to play only inside in 2015

Some linebackers move inside out. Some move outside in. Ty Powell has done both. But Powell, who has performed both outside and in with Seattle and Buffalo, will be strictly handling the latter with the Bills in 2015. Rex Ryan sees Powell as second on the depth chart behind Preston Brown. But he has impressed the coach. "The first guy I'll talk about will be Powell," Ryan told the team website. "He's been most impressive to me. Smart, picks things up quick. He was more of a special teams guy, and quite honestly if he doesn't play a snap that's fine with me. That means Preston Brown is fine, but I like Powell. I think he's really jumped up." Powell is certainly not complaining about playing inside full-time. "Last year I played (middle linebacker), and this year I'm playing 'mike' but it's in a new scheme," he said. "They had this scheme my first year here but now I'm inside. I really just refer to Nigel (Bradham) because Nigel has been inside on this defense. I'm just learning off him. But I do feel like this is my natural position."

Bills shaking things up at linebacker

Despite a successful first season in the middle of the Bills defense, Kiko Alonso won't play there in 2014. That's according to Bills GM Doug Whaley, who said on WGR 550 AM that Alonso will move to weak-side linebacker in 2014 with new linebacker Keith Rivers playing at the strong side. So who will man the middle? The Bills are hosting free-agent candidates but Whaley seems to think that "guys on campus" will get a crack at it first. Ty Powell was someone Whaley named specifically. As for linebacker Manny Lawson, Whaley said he'd like to see him become a "hybrid" player, which ESPN believes is code for a diminishing role.
