Browns' Josh McCown: Replacing Manziel as starter

McCown (ribs) will start Monday's game against the Ravens, with Johnny Manziel demoted to third on the depth chart, NFL Network's James Palmer reports. Manziel is getting demoted because he was photographed at a bar in Austin, TX during the Browns' bye week. It's not entirely clear that the demotion will last all season, but at the very least, McCown makes for a nice streaming option against a Baltimore defense that he picked apart for 457 passing yards back in Week 5. There should be further updates regarding Cleveland's quarterback situation in the coming days.

Report: Browns' Johnny Manziel named starting QB for rest of season

Johnny Manziel has been named the Browns' starting quarterback for the rest of the season, Ian Rapoport of reports. Though the Browns fell to Pittsburgh by three touchdowns Sunday, Manziel played well, completing 33-of-45 passes for 372 yards, one touchdown and a pick. He also tacked on 17 rushing yards, including an impressive scamper to the goal line in the third quarter. Coach Mike Pettine indicated after the game that Josh McCown would return as the starter following Cleveland's Week 11 bye, but he's apparently changed his mind and the Browns will go with the higher-upside Manziel for the final six games of the season.

Browns' Josh McCown: Will back up Manziel

Browns coach Mike Pettine announced Tuesday that McCown (ribs) will be the team's No. 2 quarterback behind Johnny Manziel going forward, Ian Rapoport of reports. A rib injury kept McCown out of the Browns' last two games, allowing Manziel to step in as the starter. While Cleveland dropped both contests, Manziel fared relatively well, completing a combined 48-of-78 passes for 540 yards, two touchdowns and, most importantly, just one pick. Considering the Browns spent a 2014 first-round pick on Manziel, it seemed like only a matter of time until they gave him a chance to take control of the job, and he'll now have the final six games of the season - Cleveland is on bye in Week 11 - to do just that.

Browns' Josh McCown: Expected to be inactive

McCown (ribs) is expected to be inactive Sunday against the Steelers, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Johnny Manziel will get the start. McCown has battled a number of injuries this season, and Manziel will get another shot at passing for 200 yards in a game. McCown was reportedly close to being healthy enough to play, and with the Browns off in Week 11, he could be back in the starting lineup in Week 12 against the Ravens.

Browns' Josh McCown: Not expected to start Sunday

Though coach Mike Pettine will likely wait until game-time to announce the Browns' Week 10 starting QB, Johnny Manziel is expected to draw the assignment over McCown (ribs, questionable) on Sunday against the Steelers, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. At this stage, we may not have confirmation of Cleveland's Week 10 signal-caller until the team's inactives are released in advanced of Sunday's 1:00 ET kickoff. While Pettine avoided naming a starter for the contest Friday, he did at least acknowledge that the team would only have McCown listed as active this weekend if he's able to start.

Browns' Josh McCown: Listed as questionable, Week 10 starting status unclear

McCown (ribs) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Steelers, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. Complicating matters from a fantasy perspective is that coach Mike Pettine suggested Friday that he's not naming the Browns' starter for the contest for strategic reasons. That said, we'll operate under the assumption that McCown would be in line to draw the start if he is deemed healthy enough to do so by the team, with Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal relaying via Pettine that McCown has steadily improved through the week. Johnny Manziel, who has taken most of the team's QB reps at practice this week, would get the starting nod Sunday if McCown doesn't, and it's possible that a resolution on that front may not arrive until Sunday, as the Browns' 1:00 ET kickoff approaches.

Browns' Josh McCown: Practices again Friday

McCown (ribs) participated in Friday's practice, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports. It's not clear how much work McCown got in Friday, but he was able to take the field for the third day in a row. Head coach Mike Pettine will provide an update on McCown, and likely reveal his starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Steelers, following Friday's practice.

Browns' Josh McCown: QB decision could arrive Thursday

McCown (ribs) is in line to be limited at practice again Thursday, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. Per the report, coach Mike Pettine indicated that he hopes to make a decision on his Week 10 starter by the end of the day Thursday, with McCown clearly the team's preferred option on that front, assuming it's determined that he can play through his rib issue. If McCown isn't deemed ready for the assignment, however, Johnny Manziel would be in line to make his third start of the season on Sunday against the Steelers.

Browns' Josh McCown: Will be reevaluated Wednesday

McCown (shoulder), who is gearing to practice on a limited basis, will be reevaluated after Wednesday's session, the Akron Beacon Journal reports. McCown is the clear favorite to start if healthy, but that remains a pretty big "if" at this point. Although coach Mike Pettine said earlier in the week he hopes to have a decision well before Sunday, he still considers his starting quarterback "day-to-day" at this point. If he can put a solid string of quality throws together Wednesday, it would put him on the right track to play Sunday, but it's possible more information from his evaluation isn't disclosed until Thursday morning. Thursday and Friday's practices should also provide a much clearer picture of his prospective playing status.

Browns' Josh McCown: Will start Sunday if healthy

Head coach Mike Pettine said McCown (shoulder) will start Sunday against the Steelers if he is healthy and ready to go, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. Pettine went further and said that as long as the Browns do not have to change their game plan to protect McCown's ribs, he will be under center for the Browns' Week 10 matchup. Fellow quarterback Johnny Manziel showed some flashes in his spot start last week, but it appears McCown remains the preferred quarterback in Cleveland moving forward.
