Browns' Josh McCown: Hopes to work out soon

McCown is recovering well from his broken collarbone and is hopeful that he'll receive clearance to work out in the near future, Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal reports. McCown endured an avalanche of ailments in the most recent campaign, missing one game due to a concussion, two more due to a rib injury, and the final five outings with a broken collarbone. Despite the misfortune on the injury front, he completed 186 of 292 passes for 2,109 yards, 12 touchdowns, and four interceptions in just eight games. With the troubles befalling Johnny Manziel, McCown appears to be the Browns' starting quarterback, especially with a contract in hand through the 2017 season.

Browns' Josh McCown: Season derailed by injuries

McCown, who finished the season on IR due to a broken collarbone, completed 186 of 292 passes for 2,109 yards, 12 touchdowns and four interceptions on the year. It was back and forth all year for McCown, as his health and the behavior of Johnny Manziel typically dictated whether or not the 36-year-old veteran would see the field on a given week. He was relatively effective when the team turned to him, particularly in a 457-yard effort Week 5 in Baltimore, but the overall lack of offensive weapons ultimately limited what he was able to do with his opportunities. Furthermore, a concussion, shoulder and ribs injuries limited McCown at various points in the year. He's under contract with Cleveland through 2018, but the organization seems more likely to try younger options over the coming seasons in an attempt to find a long-term solution.

Browns going back to Johnny Manziel as starting QB

Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel will start Sunday's game against the 49ers, the team announced Tuesday. With Josh McCown (collarbone) out for the year and Austin Davis coming off a terrible outing, the Browns will unsurprisingly turn back to Manziel for a four-game evaluation to close out the season. Manziel played pretty well in his last game before being benched for off-field transgressions, but the sum of his performance this season has still been mediocre. He has completed 59.4 percent of his passes for 7.3 yards per attempt, with five touchdowns and two interceptions, adding 90 yards on 17 carries. Manziel should have every opportunity to prove himself, as the weak Cleveland defense has consistently ensured that the team has to play from behind. There is some question regarding the health of top weapons Gary Barnidge (ankle) and Travis Benjamin (shoulder), but the Browns expect both to be ready for Sunday's favorable matchup with the 49ers.

Browns' Josh McCown: Placed on injured reserve

The Browns placed McCown (collarbone) on injured reserve Wednesday, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. It was announced Tuesday that McCown would be out for the rest of the season with a broken collarbone, and Wednesday's roster move confirms he will not play again this season. Head coach Mike Pettine has yet to announce who -- Austin Davis or Johnny Manziel -- will take over as the Browns' starting quarterback moving forward.

Browns QB Josh McCown out for remainder of season

Browns quarterback Josh McCown (broken collarbone) will not play again this season, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. The news was confirmed by Browns head coach Mike Pettine, who chose not to disclose whether Austin Davis or Johnny Manziel will be the replacement. Davis filled in capably during the fourth quarter of Sunday's loss to the Ravens, but he doesn't offer much in the way of long-term upside. On the other hand, Manziel has made major strides since last season, but his recent off-field controversy led Pettine to drop him from first to third on the depth chart.

Browns' Josh McCown: Could be done for season

McCown (collarbone) may miss the rest of the season, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. The Browns haven't provided any confirmation, but a broken collarbone is the most likely injury. If McCown can't play again this season, the team would then have to decide between Austin Davis and Johnny Manziel at quarterback, just one week after benching the latter for off-field reasons. Davis replaced McCown in the fourth quarter of Sunday's loss to the Ravens, engineering a game-tying touchdown drive but also making a couple of key mistakes. There should be another update available at some point Tuesday.

Browns' Josh McCown: Exits Monday's game

McCown exited Monday's game with an apparent right shoulder injury. McCown attempted to continue playing after taking a big hit during a fourth quarter possession, but he was in obvious pain after throwing a pass on the following possession and was forced from the game. Austin Davis, and not Johnny Manziel, took over at quarterback in McCown's place.

Browns' Josh McCown: Replacing Manziel as starter

McCown (ribs) will start Monday's game against the Ravens, with Johnny Manziel demoted to third on the depth chart, NFL Network's James Palmer reports. Manziel is getting demoted because he was photographed at a bar in Austin, TX during the Browns' bye week. It's not entirely clear that the demotion will last all season, but at the very least, McCown makes for a nice streaming option against a Baltimore defense that he picked apart for 457 passing yards back in Week 5. There should be further updates regarding Cleveland's quarterback situation in the coming days.

Report: Browns' Johnny Manziel named starting QB for rest of season

Johnny Manziel has been named the Browns' starting quarterback for the rest of the season, Ian Rapoport of reports. Though the Browns fell to Pittsburgh by three touchdowns Sunday, Manziel played well, completing 33-of-45 passes for 372 yards, one touchdown and a pick. He also tacked on 17 rushing yards, including an impressive scamper to the goal line in the third quarter. Coach Mike Pettine indicated after the game that Josh McCown would return as the starter following Cleveland's Week 11 bye, but he's apparently changed his mind and the Browns will go with the higher-upside Manziel for the final six games of the season.

Browns' Josh McCown: Will back up Manziel

Browns coach Mike Pettine announced Tuesday that McCown (ribs) will be the team's No. 2 quarterback behind Johnny Manziel going forward, Ian Rapoport of reports. A rib injury kept McCown out of the Browns' last two games, allowing Manziel to step in as the starter. While Cleveland dropped both contests, Manziel fared relatively well, completing a combined 48-of-78 passes for 540 yards, two touchdowns and, most importantly, just one pick. Considering the Browns spent a 2014 first-round pick on Manziel, it seemed like only a matter of time until they gave him a chance to take control of the job, and he'll now have the final six games of the season - Cleveland is on bye in Week 11 - to do just that.
