Hewitt was called up from the University of British Columbia on Tuesday to serve Jacob Markstrom's backup in the evening's game against the visiting Blues, Irfaan Gaffar of Sportsnet reports.

It's rare for an NHL team to summon a player from collegiate hockey, but the Canucks didn't have much time to find an emergency replacement Tuesday, as starting goalie Ryan Miller is unavailable due to an undisclosed issue. Hewitt is merely an insurance option at this juncture.
