Gillies made 27 saves to beat the Kings 4-1 in his NHL debut Thursday.
Gillies was scored on by Trevor Lewis 6:13 into the game, but shut the door from there. While the 23-year-old netminder is no threat to Brian Elliott's job, he should remain the backup as long as Chad Johnson (lower body) is sidelined. That role could lead to Gillies seeing some playoff action if Elliott unexpectedly reverts back to his poor early-season form.
