Ward's worst outing in months came at an inopportune time, as the Hurricanes basically needed to win out if they wanted to stay alive for a spot in the postseason. To make matters worse, the loss came at the hands of former captain Eric Staal, who chipped in with a pair of assists and a plus-3 rating.
