Staal (concussion) was placed on injured reserve Monday, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.

The move is just a formality since the center was ruled out indefinitely earlier in the day after suffering the blow in Sunday's contest against Florida. Staal only has nine points through 21 games but plays in a variety of roles for the Hurricanes, as evidenced by his average of 1:44 on the penalty kill and 2:33 on the power play this season, so his absence will surely be felt. Phil Di Giuseppe has been called up in a corresponding move and will take Staal's place in the lineup for the time being.
