Ottawa has requested that Phaneuf (wrist) waive his no-movement clause in order to expose him in the expansion draft, Pierre LeBrun of TSN reports.

Much like the Maple Leafs before them, the Senators are looking to get out from under Phaneuf's $7 million annual cap hit -- which goes through 2020-21 -- in order to free up money to spend elsewhere. The Golden Knights are likely to be looking to get above the cap floor, which could encourage them to take on the 32-year-old. While Phaneuf had a solid season (30 points in 81 games), he didn't put up the type of numbers an organization expects given his high price tag. If the veteran refuses to waive the clause, Ottawa could enter the offseason with just under $8 million in cap space and serious holes to fill at forward.
