Froese was sent to AHL Toronto on Monday, Kristen Shilton of TSN reports. Since being called up on Tuesday, Froese didn't get any playtime in either of Toronto's two games. He will be a candidate for a call up when the Maple Leafs need some forward depth later on in the season.
Froese was recalled from AHL Toronto on Tuesday, James Mirtle of The Athletic reports. Froese has played in each of the last two games for the Maple Leafs with the club a bit shorthanded among the forward ranks. After being sent down to AHL Toronto just prior to the holiday, Froese will presumably draw back into the Leafs lineup again Wednesday against the Panthers.
Froese was loaned to the AHL Marlies on Saturday. He played in two games after being recalled from the Marlies on Dec. 21. Froese has 12 goals and five assists in 26 games with the Marlies this season.
Froese was called up from the minors Wednesday. Froese has been lighting the lamp in the AHL this season with 12 goals, second on the team. Given his productivity, it was only a matter of time before injuries led to coach Mike Babcock giving the 25-year-old a look this year. If the center cracks the lineup against Colorado on Thursday, Frederik Gauthier or Josh Leivo would be the most likely odd man out. In order to make space for Froese, the Leafs placed Ben Smith (upper body) on injured reserve.
Froese was a roster cut casualty Sunday, joining three others as the group being waived by Toronto, Bob MecKenzie of TSN reports. Froese played in 56 contests for the Maple Leafs last season due to numerous injuries for the club. Now closer to full health, the team will likely send Froese back to the minors, assuming he goes unclaimed through waivers.
