Bozak left Saturday's game against Ottawa after getting hit in the head by the Senators Mike Zibanejad, the Toronto Sun reports. Zibanejad was assessed a penalty for an illegal check to the head and Bozak did not return to the game. Bozak's status for Tuesday's game against Calgary will be made clear in the coming days.
Bozak scored a goal, added a power-play assist, went plus-2 and won 24 of 30 faceoffs Thursday in a 3-2 shootout win over New Jersey. Bozak is always great in the faceoff circle, but he was on another level in this one, taking advantage of every center the Devils had to throw at him. Phil Kessel may be gone, but Bozak's still scoring at his highest pace since he notched 27 points in 37 games as a rookie in 2009-10. That's particularly impressive when you consider that the 29-year-old had been held off the scoresheet in five straight games coming in and hadn't scored a goal since Dec. 27.
Bozak assisted on both of Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau's goals, and finished with a plus-2 rating in Wednesday's 4-0 win over the Ducks. Bozak has excelled of late, with five goals and eight assists in his last 12 games. The defensively-responsible center's plus-8 rating over that span has buoyed his season mark all the way to plus-5, which is very impressive for a player toiling away on Toronto's subpar roster.
Bozak's recent strong play earned him the NHL's Third Star of the Week for the period ending Dec. 27. Bozak was second in the league with both goals (four) and points (tied with five) to help the Leafs to two wins in three games. And he recorded his second career hat trick in the process. Bozak sits tied for second in team scoring with 24 points (nine goals, 15 assists) in 30 games this season.
Bozak extended his point streak to three games and five points with a goal in Sunday's win over the Islanders. He has four goals and one assist on the streak. Bozak has been especially good in his last eight, ringing up five goals and five assists to boost his season mark to 24 points (30 games). It's funny that everyone thought that playing with Phil Kessel was the reason he put up points in the past. But Bozak is proving that he really can do without the Thrill. And deliver more points. Wow. Use him well.
