Thomas was sent to AHL Springfield on Wednesday. Thomas has played for four different teams this year, spending 33 games in the AHL in the Montreal and Arizona systems and recording 10 goals and 21 points while adding two assists in six NHL games, five for the Canadiens and one for the Coyotes. The former second round pick has been bounced around a lot, but at 23-years-old, still has time to make an impact.
Thomas was recalled from AHL Springfield on Sunday. Thomas was previously acquired from the Canadiens in December for fellow minor league forward Lucas Lessio. Since then, he's registered three goals and four assists at Springfield while waiting for his next chance to make the big league. He hasn't exactly shined at the top level in his career, with three points in 26 career games, so he'll figure to begin his Coyotes tenure deeper in the depth chart.
Thomas was traded to Arizona in exchange for Lucas Lessio on Tuesday. Thomas tallied two assists through five games played with the Canadiens this season, as well as seven goals and seven assists in 18 games with AHL St. John's. He will report to Arizona's AHL affiliate, Springfield.
Thomas was reassigned to AHL St. John's on Sunday, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports. Thomas' return to the minors could indicate that Torrey Mitchell (lower body) is on the cusp of returning to the lineup. Thomas didn't see action in either of the last two contests, and he'll now return to the minors where he should receive more consistent playing time.
Thomas assisted on Montreal's first goal in Tuesday night's 2-1 win over the Blue Jackets. Thomas was playing in his second straight game since being called up from St. John's, skating on the fourth line. He'll be in the active lineup until Torrey Mitchell (lower body) is ready, but could stick around as an extra forward with Alexander Semin (lower body) and Brandon Gallagher (finger) dealing with injuries.
