Komarov scored a goal and added a shorthanded assist in Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Panthers. Komarov has been valuable in all situations despite his modest total output, as he has contributed nine points on the power play and two shorthanded to go with 19 at even strength. While he has scored six fewer goals than last season in eight more games played, the fourth-year winger has helped offset that offensive decline by improving his rating from minus-12 to plus-5.
Komarov scored a goal and garnered an assist Wednesday in a 5-2 victory over the Blue Jackets. The points were the 26th and 27th of the season in 72 games for the Russian forward, who's actually taken a step back this year after a 36-point effort (in 67 contests) in 2015-16. Part of that can probably be attributed to rookies Auston Matthews (58 points) and Mitch Marner (56) cutting into Komarov's production, but he continues to maintain plenty of value in leagues that count hits, given his total of 207 this season.
Komarov put home a pair of goals -- one on the power play -- in Tuesday's 5-4 overtime win against the Jets. Not much of a producer all year long despite solid ice time, Komarov's quietly broken out lately, putting together a five-game point streak during which he has six total points (three on the power play) and 15 shots on goal. By way of comparison, he had six points in the prior 32 games combined. Komarov being the kind of player he is, you have to consider any points he notches to be a bonus on top of his elite production in the hits category (283 last year; 182 in 59 games this year).
Komarov picked up his eighth goal of the season Tuesday in a victory over Buffalo. The aggressive boneshaker keeps piling up the hits -- he has 140 in 42 games. But Komarov has just four goals and no helpers in the last 20 games. His fantasy value is restricted to those leagues that count speciality categories.
Komarov scored two goals -- one with the man advantage -- during Friday's win over Arizona. The tally snapped a 15-game goal drought, and after scoring 19 times last year, his slow start is certainly discouraging. However, Komarov has settled into a defense-first role and typically lines up against the opposition's top scorers, so his offensive decline is assignment based more than anything. Right now, Komarov's 106 hits through 33 games is the only value he's providing for fantasy owners, and there aren't many formats where he's worth owning.
