Megna has been sent down to AHL Hartford. Megna heads down to the minors having appeared in six games with the Blueshirts this season. An undrafted forward, Megna tallied two points in his season debut Jan. 5 but went without a point in the rest of the contests. Megna has dialed in 21 points (nine goals, 12 assists) in 38 games with the Wolf Pack this campaign and even nabbed 26 goals with Penguins' minor-league affiliate Wilkes-Barre the season before, so there is some offensive upside with Megna. His assignment to the minors should allow him to work on his game and prepare for a more significant role down the road.
Megna went scoreless with a minus-1 rating over 9:12 of ice time -- 2:49 of it on the power play -- in Thursday's 4-2 win over Minnesota. With Rick Nash (leg) out of the lineup, the Rangers also decided to scratch Tanner Glass to get Megna in there for a little offensive boost on the fourth line. He played well, creating some chances, but ultimately skated the fewest minutes of any Blueshirt. Megna's so-so numbers in the AHL and fourth-line role don't add up to a whole lot of fantasy upside.
Megna was recalled by the Rangers on Wednesday. With Rick Nash unavailable for Thursday's contest, the Rangers will add some depth among the forward ranks in the odd event another of the forwards can't go. As of now, Megna will serve as the team's 13th forward, but the official lines won't come out until pregame warmups, leaving open the possibility of him drawing in Thursday.
Megna was reassigned to the AHL on Friday, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports. Megna came out shooting, garnering a goal and an assist in his first game with the Rangers on Jan. 5, but has failed to register a point in four games since. With the signing of Daniel Paille, the writing was on the wall for the 25-year-old. In 34 contests with the AHL Wolf Pack, the winger tallied 18 points.
Megna impressed in his Rangers debut Tuesday against the Stars, notching a goal on three shots, an assist and a plus-1 rating in 11:51 of ice time. The former Penguin didn't exactly put up impressive numbers at AHL Hartford this year -- 18 points in 34 games -- but with Chris Kreider (hand) out of the lineup, he got to skate with Rick Nash and Derek Stepan in this one. To be fair, Megna did score 26 goals in 63 AHL games last year, and his presence may help reinvigorate what's largely been a stagnant Rangers offense.
