Lupul remains on Toronto's long-term injured reserve list. Loops and his $5.25 million salary remain on the Leafs' payroll, but they get cap relief for that amount. Lupul was unable to start the season with the team after failing a team physical in September. He has one more year on his contract, but he will be 34 heading into next season and his career is in jeopardy.
Lupul (sports hernia) will start the 2016-17 season on injured reserve, Paul Hendrick of Leafs TV reports. Lupul has been dogged by injuries the last several seasons and could eventually find himself on long-term IR if he continues to be sidelined. For now, it appears the team is going to stick with him and hope that he can return to action later this year. During his abridged 2015-16 campaign, the veteran garnered just 11 goals and three helpers.
Lupul (sports hernia) is a buyout candidate after playing in just 280 games in the last six seasons. The game has passed the oft-injured winger by, so the Leafs will need to trade him, buy him out or give him the Stephane Robidas rot on long-term IR treatment. Lupul is owed nine million over the next two seasons, but it's a widely-known secret around Toronto that he's played his last game in blue and white.
Lupul (sports hernia) is currently able to participate in light training activities and is expected to return in time for 2016-17 training camp, Dhiren Mahiban of Yahoo! Sports reports. Lupul made just 46 appearances this season before suffering a sports hernia in early February. He still has two years remaining on his current contract with Toronto and figures to take on a similar role with the team during the 2016-17 campaign while playing on the wing.
Lupul (abdomen) will miss the remainder of the season, Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun reports. Lupul will undergo surgery to repair a sports hernia, and will be shut down for the remainder of the season as a result. There's no reason for the Maple Leafs to rush Lupul back, as they've been out of the playoff hunt for quite some time, and would be wise to use the final 24 games of the season to evaluate the young talent within their organization. 2015-16 was another relatively disappointing campaign for Lupul, as he finished the season with just 14 points (11 goals, three assists) in 46 games. The 32-year-old winger should be ready for the start of next season's training camp.
