Maple Leafs' Shawn Matthias: To skip road trip

Matthias will miss the team's upcoming road trip due to whiplash likely from a hit sustained in Saturday's game against the Senators, Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun reports. Matthias logged just 8:38 of ice time in Saturday's contest, which could be a result of the injury. He, along with two other Leafs forwards, will stay behind as the team heads out west, prompting the recall of three other forwards to provide some depth on the road trip. Matthias' first chance to rejoin the lineup will likely come next Monday when the team returns home to face the Blackhawks, but there's no guarantee he'll be ready then either.

Maple Leafs' Shawn Matthias: Point in back-to-back games

Matthias scored his fourth goal of the season in Saturday's loss to Boston. He now has a point in each of his last two games. His move to the first line may actually be starting to yield fruit. Matthias is getting an extended audition on the first line in Toronto and may be worth pulling off the wire.

Maple Leafs' Shawn Matthias: Moves to top line

Matthias will play left wing on the top line for the near future, Jonas Siegel of TSN reports. After James van Riemsdyk was ruled out for six-to-eight weeks with a broken foot, head coach Mike Babcock has decided on Matthias filling JVR's spot alongside Tyler Bozak and P.A. Parenteau. Matthias is a big body, skates well, and is coming off of a career year in which he scored 18 goals, despite his struggles this year. It's worth taking a flyer on Matthias while he resides on Toronto's' top line.

Maple Leafs' Shawn Matthias: Puts up first multi-point game of season

Matthias scored a garbage-time goal, added an assist and went plus-2 in a 6-3 loss to the Isles on Tuesday. As usual, Matthias has been generally useless in fantasy this season, as it took him until the 34th game of the year to push his way into double-digit points. With just three goals, he's well short of being on pace to match last year's career-high 18, and it looks like this is going to be just another slow season, leaving him off the fantasy radar in the vast majority of formats.

Maple Leafs' Shawn Matthias: Benched during loss to Coyotes on Tuesday

Matthias was benched in the Leafs' loss to the Coyotes on Tuesday after being on the ice for the first two goals, reports He had solid possession stats, but that clearly wasn't good enough for coach Mike Babcock. Matthias has speed to burn, but he's never been able to find any offensive footing. He did have 18 goals last season, but so far, he's only found twine twice in 32 games. Matthias just isn't fantasy worthy at this point.

Maple Leafs' Shawn Matthias: Nets first goal

Matthias netted his first goal of the season in Monday's loss to the Coyotes. Matthias was hampered by a shoulder injury that held him out of action for a week, but has collected a point in two of five contests since returning. The 27-year-old has never topped 27 points in a season though, so he shouldn't be a factor in most fantasy leagues.

Maple Leafs' Shawn Matthias: Returns Friday

Matthias (shoulder) will play against the Blue Jackets on Friday, The Toronto Sun reports. The news does not come as much of a surprise, as Matthias was expected to suit up after returning to practice Wednesday, but it's still an encouraging development either way. He figures to slot into a top-six role on the wing once again.

Matthias was held out of Saturday's game against the Senators with the shoulder injury, but returned to practice Wednesday, and is expected to return to action Friday against the Blue Jackets. If he is indeed available, he will likely slot into a top-six role against Columbus.

Maple Leafs' Shawn Matthias: To practice Wednesday

Matthias (shoulder) will take part in Wednesday's practice after missing Monday's skate, Mark Masters of TSN reports. After his best NHL season last year for the Canucks, where he scored 18 goals in 78 games, this is an inauspicious start after his move across Canada. He has no points and a minus-2 rating in his first two games in Toronto.

  • Leafs Sign Matthias

News: Shawn Matthias signed a one-year, $2.3 million contract with the Leafs on Monday, the Province reports.
Analysis: Shawn Matthias notched 18 goals and nine assists in 78 games with the Canucks this past season, playing mostly on the team's third line. His fantasy upside with the Leafs thus hinges on where he'll slot in with his new team, in addition to whether or not sees more power-play action than he did with Vancouver.
