Maple Leafs' Michael Grabner: Sets up score Wednesday

Grabner contributed an assist Wednesday night, but it wasn't enough as the Maple Leafs ultimately fell to the Sabres, 2-1 in a shootout. Grabner has been a rare asset on the ice for a Leafs team currently owning a 1-3-2 record, having registered two helpers in four games to complement a plus-3 rating. His solid play could eventually land him a more prominent role, but for now his upside is limited as a bottom-six forward.

    • Isles Ship Grabner To Toronto

News: Michael Grabner was acquired by the Maple Leafs on Thursday in exchange for forward Taylor Beck and four minor-league players, Stephen Whyno of The Canadian Press reports.
Analysis: The Maple Leafs were closing in on the NHL limit of 50 active contracts during training camp, so by taking back Michael Grabner and shipping out five other players, the team's contract count now stands at 45. None of the five players Toronto sent out were viewed as integral pieces for the future, but Grabner should have a strong opportunity to land a second- or third-line role with his new team. The deep Islanders forward ranks resulted in Grabner serving as a healthy scratch in multiple instances last season, but the 27-year-old has shown some scoring chops when given regular minutes. He's tallied 36 goals in 143 games the last three seasons, and potted a career-best 34 goals in his debut campaign with the Islanders in 2010-11. Though it's unlikely that Grabner will ever get back to that level, he could immediately become one of the Leafs' top secondary scoring threats.

Barring a late move in training camp, Grabner will battle for a role on the Isles' third line in training camp, but it's more likely that he serves as a regular healthy scratch for the squad.
    • Isles Trying To Trade Grabner

News: The Islanders are trying to trade Michael Grabner, according to Newsday.
Analysis: This should not really come as a surprise as Michael Grabner doesn't seem to mesh well with coach Jack Capuano. The problem is how do you trade a player who has under performed through most of his career, has a $3 million cap hit, and is coming off two hernia surgeries?

News: Michael Grabner has had hernia surgery this off-season, according to Newsday's Arthur Staple.
