Islanders' Thomas Greiss: Rolls over Kings with 28 stops

Greiss won his fourth consecutive start Thursday, stopping 28 of 30 shots to down the Kings by a 5-2 tally. Not that Greiss hasn't played well on the whole over this stretch, but he owes his skaters a gift basket for the kind of offensive support they've provided -- how's 24 goals in four games sound? Although Jaroslav Halak continues to start approximately two out of every three games for the Islanders, Greiss merits lineup consideration on those occasions when he's deployed between the pipes.

Islanders' Thomas Greiss: Starts in goal Thursday

Greiss will be between the pipes when the Islanders host the Kings on Thursday, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports. Greiss cashed in a strong performance in his last outing Sunday against the Oilers, registering a .968 save percentage in the 8-1 rout. The 30-year-old typically sees limited action, but will look to lead the Islanders to their fourth straight victory (when he's been in the net) in Thursday's home matchup.

Islanders' Thomas Greiss: Stops 30 in win

Greiss turned aside 30 of 31 shots in Sunday's win over the Oilers. It was a strong performance from Greiss, but this one was never in doubt as the Islanders poured on eight goals, five of which came before the Oilers got their lone tally. The 30-year-old has been effective when called upon, registering a 2.26 GAA and .929 save percentage in limited action.

Islanders' Thomas Greiss: Receives starting nod Sunday

Greiss will receive the start in goal Sunday against the Oilers. Greiss' last start between the pipes dates back to a Jan. 12 win over the Blue Jackets, but he'll finally relieve Jaroslav Halak of his duties Sunday as part of a back-to-back set. The German netminder holds a 2.32 GAA and .927 save percentage over 21 contests this season, and will look to improve on that Sunday against an Oilers club that struggles to score (2.18 goals per game) on the road.

Islanders' Thomas Greiss: Gets back on ice with win over Jackets

Greiss got back between the pipes Tuesday and stopped 18 of 20 shots in a 5-2 win over Columbus. It'd been nine days since Greiss's last start, as the Isles had turned to Jaroslav Halak in consecutive games following his return from injured reserve. It didn't help that Greiss had given up nine goals in two games prior to Halak's activation, but his return to the net in this one served as a reminder of just how much more successful the team's been with the German "backup." In 21 games, he's picked up 13 wins; by comparison, Halak's won just 10 of 22. With both goalies healthy again, this could be a hot-hand situation -- and for now, Greiss has the hot hand.

Islanders' Thomas Greiss: Tuesday's crease commander

Greiss will receive the starting nod Tuesday night when the Islanders host the Blue Jackets. Greiss has been awful in limited action to start 2016, surrendering nine goals on 67 shots to the Penguins and Stars respectively. However, a date with the Blue Jackets figures very well could get him back on track since Columbus is last in the league in terms of record (15-24-4) and goal differential (minus-30).

Islanders' Thomas Greiss: Surrenders five but gets win

Greiss stopped 36 of 41 shots in Sunday's win over the Stars. It wasn't a great performance for Greiss, but his mates in front of him poured it on for six goals to help secure the win. The 29-year-old has surrendered nine goals in his past two outings and could see his run of starts come to an end soon with starter Jaroslav Halak due back in the near future from an upper body injury.

Islanders' Thomas Greiss: In goal Sunday

Greiss will start in goal Sunday against the Stars. Greiss continues to see most of the starts in net with Jaraslav Halak (upper body) still sidelined. However, it appears Halak is nearing a return to the lineup, so it's quite possible Greiss' run of starts is nearing an end. The netminder will face a tough matchup in Sunday's contest against a Stars club that leads the league in scoring.

Islanders' Thomas Greiss: Gets rocked in loss

Greiss allowed four goals on 26 shots in the loss to Pittsburgh on Saturday. The game was arguably the worst of the season for Greiss who has played exceptional when called upon to replace Jaroslav Halak. With Halak expected to return to the crease Sunday, Greiss should return to being one of the best backup goaltenders in the NHL.

Islanders' Thomas Greiss: Will guard the four-by-six Saturday

Greiss will look to command the crease as Saturday's road starter against the Penguins. Greiss will be counted on more than usual since Jaroslav Halak (upper body) is on injured reserve. Fortunately for the Isles, he's been brilliant this season, with an 11-5-2 record, 2.03 GAA and .936 save percentage.
