Sabres' Matt Moulson: Eclipses previous season's penalty minute total

Moulson took a minor hooking penalty Tuesday against Philadelphia, giving him six penalty minutes on the season. If fantasy owners are looking for peripheral stats from Moulson, they won't get much from the gentlemanly player. He took just two minor penalties the previous season and just four the season before that. He now has 100 PIM in 483 career games. Since Evander Kane's injury (ankle), Moulson has seen his ice time creep up, but remains a fringe fantasy option given his minimal production and sparse usage on the team's top line. He remains a fixture on the power play, but hasn't done much damage there.

    • Set to open season on second line

News: Matt Moulson will open the season as Jack Eichel's left winger on the second line, reports The Buffalo News.
Analysis: Matt Moulson showed good chemistry with Eichel, while Evander Kane will be the first-line left wing. The former three-time 30-goal scorer for the Islanders had a terrible season with the Sabres last year, scoring just 13 goals in 77 games. He'll most assuredly top that mark this year playing alongside Eichel, and should provide fantasy owners with some good value in the later rounds.
    • Sabres' Moulson Set To Return

News: Matt Moulson is set to return to action against the Hurricanes on Monday after missing two games with the flu, the Buffalo News reports.
Analysis: Based on the Sabres' morning skate, Matt Moulson -- who has 40 points in 74 games to date -- will work on the team's top line Monday, along with Johan Larsson and Tyler Ennis.
    • Sabres Rule Moulson Out For Saturday

News: Matt Moulson (illness) didn't travel with the Sabres to Long Island for Saturday's game, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.
Analysis: Matt Moulson will miss out on one last appearance at Nassau Coliseum against his former team, as the Islanders are set to relocate to Brooklyn next season. The winger will remain in Buffalo and instead set his sights on getting healthy in advance of Monday's match against the Hurricanes.
    • Sabres' Moulson Out Friday

News: Matt Moulson (illness) will not play Friday against the Blackhawks, Paul Hamilton of WGR Sports Radio 550 reports.
Analysis: With Matt Moulson out of the lineup, the Sabres have recalled Tim Schaller from AHL Rochester to provide some depth up front. Moulson's next chance to suit up will come on Saturday against the Islanders.
    • Sabres' Moulson Feeling Under Weather

News: Matt Moulson (illness) may not be available for Friday's game against the Blackhawks, Bill Hoppe of the Olean Times Herald reports.
Analysis: If Matt Moulson is unable to play, the Sabres may need to recall an extra forward from AHL Rochester. Buffalo plays back-to-back games this weekend, with Friday's game followed by a Saturday contest in Long Island.
    • Sabres' Moulson Records Power-Play Goal In Win

News: Matt Moulson notched a power-play goal in Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Maple Leafs.
Analysis: Matt Moulson tied the score at 3-3 less than two minutes into the third period, giving him his fifth point in as many games. It's nice to see Moulson finishing the season on a high note, but he's largely failed to provide the spark the Sabres were counting on from the top-line wing when they inked him to a five-year contract last July. With 40 points through 74 games, he's on track to finish with his lowest scoring total in a season since 2008-09.
    • Sabres' Moulson Collects Two Points In Loss

News: Matt Moulson scored a goal and an assist in Monday's 4-3 loss to Dallas.
Analysis: The left winger now has four points in his past five games and has played much better in the latter stages of the season. After scoring just three points in January, Matt Moulson had nine points in February and so far has eight points in 10 games in March. The Sabres have a slate of porous opponents over the next four games, including the Coyotes twice and the Avs and Leafs once each, which might provide a small boon for Moulson. The only concern would be Moulson's lack of shots on goal, of which he has just eight in his past four games, including just one shot on goal Monday.
    • Sabres' Moulson Adds Goal, Two Assists Wednesday

News: Matt Moulson racked up a goal and two assists in Wednesday's 4-3 shootout loss to the Maple Leafs.
Analysis: The top line of Matt Moulson, Tyler Ennis and Johan Larsson combined for nine points against the Leafs and brings Moulson's total to four points in his past three games. Moulson will get plenty of opportunities as one of the team's veteran forwards, but in general his second stint with Buffalo has been forgettable, scoring just 10 goals in 64 games. If the Sabres' top line continues to click, Moulson may end the season on a strong note, but depth scorers on stronger teams are better fantasy options.
    • Sabres' Moulson Helps Out In Win

News: Matt Moulson set up a pair of goals and went plus-4 in Thursday's win over the Canucks.
Analysis: Matt Moulson's been a modest producer in recent times, along with the rest of the Buffalo offense, as this was his first multi-point effort since Jan. 17. However, he does now have five points in his last five games, which is what amounts to a hot streak for him this year.
