  • Grigorenko skating for Russian team

News: Former Red Wings minor leaguer Igor Grigorenko continues to play for Salavat Ufa Yulayev of the KHL (Russia) after abruptly leaving Grand Rapids of the AHL earlier this season. He has one goal and seven assists in 29 games for Salavat.
Analysis: The rookie never stepped foot onto the ice this season for Detroit and hasn't since being drafted in the second round in 2001. It appears as though he won't be back until next season at the earliest. He is nothing more than a long-term Fantasy keeper, but even that is risky at this time.
  • Grigorenko headed back to Russia

News: The Sports Xchange reports Red Wings LW Igor Grigorenko is headed back to Russia, after refusing an assignment to Grand Rapids (AHL) after Friday's game. Grigorenko had an out-clause in his contract enabling him to return to his homeland if he wasn't on the NHL roster after spending three weeks in the minors the first month of the season. He can earn more money playing for a club in the Russian Super league ($1 million, tax-free) than he can in the minors ($70,000).

  • Grigorenko called up Wednesday

News: The Sports Xchange notes: LW Igor Grigorenko was recalled from Grand Rapids (AHL) but has yet to make his NHL debut.
Analysis: The prospect remains a useful player in long-term keeper Fantasy formats, but keep him reserved in all leagues for now.
  • Grigorenko fails to make team

News: Prospect Igor Grigorenko has failed to make the Detroit Red Wings roster and will start the year with Grand Rapids of the AHL.
Analysis: The prospect remains a useful player in long-term keeper Fantasy formats, but keep him reserved in all leagues until he can return to the NHL level.
  • Grigorenko to get a look

News: Coach Mike Babcock is eager to see Russian rookie Igor Grigorenko during the preseason, skating with and against NHL players. "He did a lot of good things with the puck," GM Ken Holland said. "He has to adjust from the European-style hockey in Russia to the style here. It's different, a higher tempo."
Analysis: Grigorenko had five assists in four games during a rookie tournament and he participated in the team's rookie camp. The team has an agreement to return Grigorenko to Russia if he is not in the team's plans for 2007-08. He is worth a look in deeper Fantasy leagues if he wins a roster spot and long-term keeper formats regardless of his situation.
