    • Isles Sign Carkner To PTO

News: Matt Carkner signed a professional tryout contract with the Islanders on Monday.
Analysis: The 34-year-old never appeared in a game for the Islanders last season after suffering a back injury during training camp that required surgery. Matt Carkner was later activated from IR in mid-February and sent to AHL Bridgeport, where he spent the remainder of the 2014-15 campaign. Carkner's rough-and-tumble style has historically lent itself to high PIM totals, but the blueliner will face too difficult a battle to see regular ice time with the Islanders, much less win a roster spot this season.
    • Isles Activate, Waive Carkner

News: Matt Carkner was activated from injured reserve and placed on waivers Sunday.
Analysis: Matt Carkner has been on injured reserve since the beginning of the season, but appears ready to begin working his way back. The Isles likely placed him on waivers with the intention of sending him to the minors for rehab work, and that should end up the outcome as it's unlikely anyone will claim him.
    • Isles' Carkner Likely Done For Year

News: Matt Carkner (back) is expected to miss the rest of the season, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.
Analysis: Matt Carkner aggravated his back injury during the team's first preseason game of the season and underwent surgery last week to fix the problem. The physical blueliner will have to get healthy for next season as the Isles prepare for the rest of this season without him.
    • Isles Carkner Headed To IR

News: Matt Carkner (upper body) will start the season on IR, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.
Analysis: Matt Carkner hasn't skated in a few days now, and will be stashed on IR until he can be cleared for practice. The blueliner tallied three assists and 149 PIM in 53 games last season.
    • Isles' Carkner Still Day-To-Day

News: Matt Carkner remained off the ice Friday with an upper-body injury, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.
Analysis: Matt Carkner won't play in the Islanders' final preseason game Friday, putting his status in question for the Oct. 10 regular season opener. Regardless, aside from in leagues that count penalty minutes, Carkner projects as a below-average contributor in nearly every other fantasy category.
    • Isles' Carkner Day-To-Day

News: Matt Carkner (undisclosed) missed practice Saturday, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.
Analysis: Matt Carkner's injury is day-to-day, so it's safe to assume he'll be available for the start of the regular season unless more information comes out.
    • Isles' Carkner Making Minimal Impact

News: Matt Carkner has three points and a minus-9 rating in 38 games for the Islanders on the season.
Analysis: Aside from leagues that count penalty minutes, a category Matt Carkner leads the Islanders in with 95 PIM, the defenseman doesn't offer much fantasy utility. That's especially true now to Lubomir Visnovsky and Travis Hamonic are back healthy, as Carkner hasn't even seen the ice since Jan. 27.
    • Isles' Carkner Returns

News: Matt Carkner (lower body) will return to action Thursday against Montreal.
Analysis: With Matt Carkner back in the Isles' lineup, Radek Martinek will take a seat on Thursday.
    • Isles' Carkner Nears Return

News: Matt Carkner (lower body) could come off IR for Thursday's game against Montreal, Newsday reports.
Analysis: In that case, Matt Carkner, who has been sidelined since Feb. 5, would likely step into the lineup for Radek Martinek on Thursday.
    • Isles' Carkner Back On Ice

News: Matt Carkner (lower body) was back on the ice Tuesday, according to Newsday's Arthur Staple.
Analysis: Matt Carkner has been out for a little over a month with this injury, but looks to be close to a return. Carkner's only real value to the Isles is the toughness he adds to the lineup and his ability to clear out opposing players from the crease.
