  • Caps' Erskine Not Expected To Play This Season

News: John Erskine (neck) isn't expected to play in the Caps' final two games of the season, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: John Erskine skated on his own after Wednesday's morning session, but doesn't appear to be in line to take contact with the team before the regular season draws to a close. He didn't play a single game this season after undergoing neck surgery in October, but should be fully healthy for the start of the 2015-16 campaign. Erskine will become a free agent this summer.
  • Caps' Erskine Skates With Team

News: John Erskine (neck) resumed skating with the team Tuesday, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: After being shut down in October following neck surgery, John Erskine rejoined the Capitals two weeks ago and is now beginning to progress toward the finish line of his recovery process. The 34-year-old appears to have regained much of the strength that is essential to his hard-checking game, but it seems doubtful he'll be able to make a return to the lineup this season. Instead, Erskine is just looking toward getting himself close to full health before the start of the 2015-16 campaign.
  • Caps' Erskine Skates Thursday

News: John Erskine (neck) was able to get in a skate Thursday morning, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: John Erskine has been off the ice since undergoing surgery in October to repair a disk in his neck. The defenseman has largely remained at home back in Canada most of this season, and continues to experience pain following the procedure. The fact that he was able to test out his neck during Thursday's session suggests he's noticed some level of improvement, but it still appears highly unlikely that he'll return before the season ends.
  • Caps Move Erskine To IR

News: Erskien (upper body) was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: The Capitals ruled John Erskine out of the entirety of their three-game road trip to western Canada earlier this week, so the IR move will allow the team to add another defenseman from the minors for depth purposes, if they choose to do so. Erskine had been a healthy scratch for the Capitals in every game even before succumbing to the injury.
  • Caps' Erskine Undergoes Neck Surgery

News: John Erskine, who was placed on injured reserve earlier Wednesday, underwent surgery to repair a disk in his neck.
Analysis: The procedure will require John Erskine to begin a rehab program within the next few weeks, suggesting that he's not close to returning to action anytime soon. He could be a candidate for long-term injured reserve if his recovery ends up stretching into the second half of the season.
  • Caps' Erskine To Miss Next Three Games

News: John Erskine has an upper-body injury and will not join the Capitals for their three-game road trip beginning Wednesday.
Analysis: John Erskine has been a healthy scratch all season for the Capitals, so it seems likely that he sustained the injury at some point during a recent practice. Since he hasn't been playing regularly for the Capitals anyway, his unavailability for the road trip shouldn't have an impact on coach Barry Trotz's lineup decisions.
  • Caps' Erskine No Longer Dealing With Concussion

News: After dealing with a concussion earlier this month, John Erskine has been a healthy scratch the last seven games, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: The Capitals have gone with Jack Hillen in the lineup while John Erskine has remained in the press box those last seven games, but the two defensemen could trade places in Saturday's game. Hillen looks unlikely to play Saturday after suffering an injury Tuesday night, creating an opening for Erskine to rejoin the lineup.
  • Caps' Erskine Questionable For Saturday

News: John Erskine (head) passed his concussion protocol testing but is still expected to sit out Saturday against Phoenix, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: The big defenseman is just coming off a leg injury and is now dealing with this which he apparently suffered during Wednesday's tilt with the Flyers. He remains day-to-day.
  • Ailing Erskine Out For Caps On Thursday

News: John Erskine (undisclosed) will not play Thursday against the Bruins.
Analysis: The Capitals haven't revealed the exact issue John Erskine is dealing with, but whatever it may be, it more than likely stemmed from Wednesday's loss to the Flyers. Cameron Schilling will be called up from AHL Hershey before the game to take Erskine's spot in the lineup.
  • Erskine Draws back In For Caps

News: John Erskine (leg) is expected to return to the lineup Thursday against the Panthers, Mike Vogel of reports.
Analysis: John Erskine missed the Capitals' final two games before the break with a leg injury, but after taking the last couple of weeks to recover, he should be available for his full allotment of minutes Thursday. The 33-year-old has just three points in 31 games and doesn't offer much production in the defensive categories either.
