Islanders' Travis Hamonic: Scores his first goal of the season

Hamonic snapped his goose egg in his 20th game of the season in a 5-3 loss to Montreal on Friday. Hamonic scored just 39 seconds into the second period to pull the Islanders within one. Even though the talented defenseman has requested a trade out of Brooklyn, the off-ice distractions have not seemed to make an impact on Hamonic's play. Hamonic was second among the Islanders in ice time and also fired seven shots on goal to go with his four hits. If he does get traded, the Islanders will have a big void to fill on the blue line. If he can score just a little more often, he could be a valuable fantasy asset.

Islanders' Travis Hamonic: Has requested a trade from the Islanders

Hamonic has requested a trade from the Islanders, reports Newsday. Apparently Hamonic requested this trade at some point before the beginning of the regular season and the Islanders are doing their best to accommodate him. Hamonic has mentioned that the reason for the request has nothing to do with the Islanders but is a personal matter as he would like to be traded closer to his family in western Canada. Hamonic may be the Islanders best overall defenseman so it won't be an easy sell as general manager Garth Snow has already stated that he doesn't want prospects or draft picks in return but is searching for a defenseman of equal value.

Islanders' Travis Hamonic: Playing more than any other Islander

Hamonic is averaging 24 minutes on the ice through five regular season games. Hamonic ranks 13th in the NHL in time spent on the ice and first on his team by almost three minutes. However, the impressive playing time has not translated into points for the second-line defenseman as he's only managed one assist in five games. Hamonic's chances to improve look promising since he's attempted 12 shots and will likely continue to receive over 20 minutes per contest.

News: Travis Hamonic (knee) didn't participate in Monday's optional practice, according to Newsday's Arthur Staple.
