Penguins' Jeff Zatkoff: Comes up big against Panthers

Zatkoff stopped 42 shots in a 3-2 overtime victory against the Panthers on Saturday. Aside from a fluky Jussi Jokinen goal, Zatkoff came up big for the second straight night. The backup relieved starter Marc-Andre Fleury on Friday, stopping 13 of 14 shots. The two outings represented the first time in 2015-16 Zatkoff played on back-to-back nights and his performance was outstanding. While it's unlikely coach Mike Sullivan goes with Zatkoff on Monday, he's improved his short-term stock with the team.

Penguins' Jeff Zatkoff: Receives starting nod Saturday

Zatkoff will be between the pipes in Saturday's game against the Panthers. Zatkoff has been decent in limited action this season, posting a 3-5-1 record with a 2.73 GAA and .919 save percentage in 11 appearances. The former third-round pick will likely be tested early and often in a tough road matchup Saturday with a Panthers club averaging 2.96 goals per game athome this season, sixth in the NHL.

Penguins' Jeff Zatkoff: Give team the blues Monday

Zatkoff surrendered four goals on 24 shots in a 5-2 loss to the Blues on Monday. Playing for the first time since New Year's Eve, the backup did little to inspire confidence in his play. Zatkoff is fortunate that Pittsburgh prefers up-and-coming netminder Matt Murray to start in Wilkes-Barre instead of backing up Marc-Andre Fleury, otherwise Zatkoff would be out of a job.

Penguins' Jeff Zatkoff: Surrenders four in first start since Dec. 31

Zatkoff didn't play well Monday, allowing four goals on 24 shots in a 5-2 road loss to the Blues. This was Zatkoff's first start of the calendar year, as he'd taken a back seat to workhorse starter Marc-Andre Fleury since Dec. 31 -- a 33-save win against Detroit. He's stuck on three wins on the season and saw his save percentage drop to .918 and his GAA rise to 2.77 against St. Louis, so it's safe to say there are better spot-start options out there among backup goaltenders if you're looking for a quick win.

Penguins' Jeff Zatkoff: Starts in net Tuesday

Zatkoff will start in net Monday against the Blues. Zatkoff will be making just his 10th outing of the season Monday with normal starter Marc-Andre Fleury getting the night off. Following those nine appearances, Zatkoff has a .926 save percentage and a 2.60 GAA.

Penguins' Jeff Zatkoff: Shakes off poor start

Zatkoff made 33 saves in a 5-2 victory against Detroit on Thursday. The hometown boy started poorly, surrendering two goals in the first 12 minutes of the game before settling down. Zatkoff needed a big performance to hold off impressive rookie Matt Murray and he did just that Thursday. Look for Zatkoff to keep the backup job whenever starter Marc-Andre Fleury (concussion) returns -- something that could happen as soon as Saturday.

Penguins' Jeff Zatkoff: Defending net against Red Wings

Zatkoff will tend the twine Thursday against Detroit. Zatkoff is in a tight battle with fellow netminder Matt Murray for the backup job when starter Marc-Andre Fleury (concussion) returns to the lineup. The Penguins started the year with the 28-year-old firmly positioned as the team's number two goaltender, but a few difficult outings, including allowing six to get behind him against Boston, appear to have coach Mike Sullivan thinking about making a change.

Penguins' Jeff Zatkoff: Deflects 27 shots in loss

Zatkoff stopped 27 of 28 shots on goal in Sunday's 1-0 loss to the Jets. Zatkoff was solid in between the pipes, stopping every shot except for a penalty shot awarded in the first period on Sunday. It was a sharp turnaround from the 28-year-old's previous outing in which he allowed six goals. With starter Marc-Andre Fleury (concussion) still out, expect Zatkoff to continue to split time with fellow netminder Matt Murray.

Penguins' Jeff Zatkoff: Will start Sunday

Zatkoff will be in the cage Sunday against the Jets, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Zatkoff was replaced in net for each of the last three games by Matt Murray after allowing six goals to the Bruins back on Dec. 18. He'll get another chance Sunday in the second game of a back-to-back set, but likely remains behind Murray on the pecking order for starts in net until Marc-Andre Fleury returns.

Penguins' Jeff Zatkoff: Gets railroaded Friday

Zatkoff surrendered six goals on 34 shots Friday against Boston. The struggling Penguins needed Zatkoff to play his best hockey, but it just didn't happen. Rookie Matt Murray will likely make his NHL debut Saturday, but coach Mike Sullivan did not name his starter against the Hurricanes following Friday's loss.
