Penguins' Jeff Zatkoff: Takes shootout loss

Zatkoff stopped 34 of 36 shots in a 3-2 shootout loss to Edmonton on Saturday. After keeping the Oilers quiet over the final 57-plus minutes of the contest, Zatkoff gave up consecutive shootout goals to Matt Hendricks and Jordan Eberle. The start was just his fourth of the season and first since Nov. 14. Pittsburgh next plays back-to-back games Saturday and Sunday in Los Angeles and Anaheim, respectively, when Zatkoff might next get another chance in goal.

Penguins' Jeff Zatkoff: Will tend twine Saturday

Zatkoff will be in goal as Saturday's home starter against the Oilers. Zatkoff has only made three starts this season, as Marc-Andre Fleury is the undisputed starter for the Pens. But Zatkoff has done well in limited time, allowing five goals on 68 shots, good for a .926 save percentage.

Penguins' Jeff Zatkoff: Gets no help from mates in loss

Zatkoff turned away 33 pucks in a 4-0 loss to the Devils. He got no help from his teammates and in fact, the Pens hardly tested Cory Schneider on the night. It was Zatkoff's first loss of the season. He won't get a lot of starts this season behind Marc-Andre Fleury, so don't expect him to bolster your netminding. At least, not right now -- he may see more starts later in the season if the Pens start to protect Fleury as they approach the postseason.

Penguins' Jeff Zatkoff: Gets nod Saturday

Zatkoff will start Saturday against the Devils. Marc-Andre Fleury has terrible career numbers in New Jersey, so this move makes sense. Zatkoff is 2-0 with a 1.96 GAA in 2015-16, but the Pens typically have trouble winning in Newark.

Penguins' Jeff Zatkoff: Will likely start Saturday against New Jersey

Zatkoff will likely be between the pipes in Saturday's game against the Devils,'s Mike Morreale reports. Marc-Andre Fleury got the start in net Friday against Columbus, allowing two goals on 28 shots en route to a 2-1 loss to the Blue Jackets. Friday marked Fleury's third straight start in net, so the Penguins will likely roll with Zatkoff on Saturday to give Fleury an opportunity to recuperate on the bench. Zatkoff has been fantastic in limited action this season, posting a 2-0-0 record with a 1.97 GAA and .952 save percentage in three appearances.

      Penguins' Jeff Zatkoff: Starting Friday

Zatkoff will be in between the pipes for Friday's tilt with Edmonton, Pens Inside Scoop reports. Zatkoff will make just his second start of the season, providing a well-deserved rest for starter Marc-Andre Fleury. After a slow start to the campaign, the Penguins have scored 3.5 goals per game over their last four contests. As their scoring improves, the Pens will have to rely less and less on their goaltenders, putting Zatkoff in a position to succeed against a young Edmonton team.

Penguins' Jeff Zatkoff: Gets starting nod Thursday against Sabres

Zatkoff will be the starter in goal Thursday night against the Sabres, Jenn Menendez of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Penguins' starting goalie Marc-Andre Fleury will get the night off after leading the Penguins to the win over the Capitals Wednesday night, giving Zatkoff his first opportunity to start this season. He only appeared in one contest for Pittsburgh last season, but played in 20 in the 2013-2014 season, compiling a respectable .913 save percentage and 2.58 GAA. Tonight should be a favorable matchup for Zatkoff and the Penguins as they've won their last two games and they are hosting a Sabres team that has played poorly in the early going, posting a 3-6 record.

Penguins' Jeff Zatkoff: Could get nod Saturday in Nashville

Jeff Zatkoff could make his first appearance Saturday in Nashville following a poor performance by goalie Marc-Andre Fleury on Thursday. Fleury looked tired in the net and let a few long-range shots go past him, leading to speculation that the team could give him a rest Saturday. By the same token, the Pens need a win and coach Mike Johnston may be on the hot seat, so there's still a chance Fleury starts. Either way Pittsburgh will need a better showing from its tender Saturday against the Predators.

    • Allows seven in loss

News: Jeff Zatkoff gave up seven goals on 22 shots in Wednesday's preseason loss to the Red Wings.
Analysis: Heading into the preseason it seemed as though Jeff Zatkoff had a stranglehold on the Penguins' backup goaltender job. However, he's largely struggled between the pipes this preseason, while 21-year-old goaltender prospect Matt Murray has looked good in limited action. If Zatkoff struggles early on in the regular season, Murray could very well leapfrog him on the depth chart.
    • Zatkoff On Call For Pens If Needed

News: Jeff Zatkoff made 26 saves in a 4-1 win for the Baby Penguins on Wednesday
Analysis: Pittsburgh might recall Jeff Zatkoff from Wilkes-Barre if backup Thomas Greiss continues to struggle. Zatkoff served as Marc-Andre Fleury's backup in 2013-14, compiling a 12-6-2 record, 2.61 GAA and .912 save percentage.
