Devils' David Schlemko: Out Friday for personal reasons

Schlemko (lower body) will not play Friday to be with his wife, who is expecting to give birth, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports. It's not clear if Schlemko is still dealing with the lower-body injury, but Devils head coach John Hynes reportedly mentioned that the team will find out later Friday if Schlemko will accompany the team on a flight to Montreal for Saturday's game against the Habs.

Devils' David Schlemko: Could return Friday

Schlemko (lower body) said his injury is minor and he should be ready to play Friday versus the Canadiens, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports. Given that Schlemko is already looking ahead to Friday's game, it's probably safe to assume that he will not draw into the match with the Blue Jackets on Wednesday night. Eric Gelinas could get more playing time as long as Schlemko needs time to heal.

Devils' David Schlemko: Day-to-day with lower-body injury

Schlemko will miss Sunday's game with a lower-body injury and is considered day-to-day, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports. Schlemko will skip Sunday's contest at a minimum, opening the door for Eric Gelinas to draw in against the Canucks. The blueliner's next chance to rejoin the lineup will come Wednesday, but the team should provide an update on his status at some point before the game.

    • Devils' Schlemko Returns To Practice

News: David Schlemko (undisclosed) returned to practice Monday, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.
Analysis: The injury was never believed to be particularly serious, but it's good to see David Schlemko back at practice nonetheless. Schlemko's status isn't one fantasy owners need to be familiar with, however. The 28-year-old defender was often a healthy scratch last season, a trend that's likely to continue with his new team in 2015-16.
    • Devils Sign Schlemko For Defense Depth

News: David Schlemko signed a one-year, $625,000 contract with the Devils on Thursday, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.
Analysis: The Devils will bring David Schlemko in on a one-way deal, where he's expected to fit in as the team's seventh defenseman. The 28-year-old will be one of the older players on a crowded New Jersey blue line, so his biggest impact will likely come off the ice in terms of the mentoring he provides for youngsters like Damon Severson, Adam Larsson, and Raman Hrabarenka. Schlemko often served as a healthy scratch while spending time with the Coyotes, Stars, and Flames last season, producing one goal and three assists over 44 games.
    • Flames' Schlemko Battled Groin Injury In Playoffs

News: David Schlemko said Tuesday that he battled a groin injury during the playoffs, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet 960 The Fan reports.
Analysis: The groin issue isn't expected to hamper David Schlemko throughout the offseason, putting him on rather stable ground as he enters unrestricted free agency. The 28-year-old profiles as a sixth or seventh defenseman for most clubs, so he likely won't be in line for much more than a one- or two-year contract with any team that might have interest in him.
    • Flames' Schlemko Earns Assist In Win

News: David Schlemko recorded an assist in Sunday's Game 3 win over the Canucks.
Analysis: David Schlemko was a healthy scratch for much of the season across stints with the Coyotes, Stars, and Flames, but season-ending injuries to Mark Giordano (biceps) and Ladislav Smid (neck) have forced him into a regular role during the playoffs. Even so, due to the light minutes Schlemko receives on the Flames' third pairing, he's far from an ideal play in daily formats. He's produced five points in his 47 games this season.
    • Flames' Schlemko Gets Shootout Winner

News: In his first game with the Flames, David Schlemko netted a highlight-reel shootout goal to clinch a 4-3 win over the Bruins on Thursday.
Analysis: As a defenseman with one shootout attempt in the NHL, not many were expecting the beautiful move David Schlemko put on Tuukka Rask to clinch the victory. The blueliner only had four points in 26 games with the Stars, but is off to a good start in Calgary.
    • Schlemko Claimed By Calgary

News: David Schlemko was claimed by the Flames on Sunday, Michael Russo of the Star Tribune reports.
Analysis: David Schlemko was placed on waivers by the Stars on Saturday and likely would have been sent down to AHL Texas had the Flames not stepped in to grab the 27-year-old. This will be the third stop for Schlemko this season and it would be surprising if he saw extended time on the ice in Calgary.
    • Stars Place Schlemko On Waivers

News: David Schlemko was placed on waivers Saturday, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
Analysis: The move was likely made with the impending trade deadline in mind, as David Schlemko's removal from the 23-man roster would give the Stars more cap room to work with. Expect Schlemko to pass through waivers unclaimed and report to AHL Texas on Sunday.
