Sharks' John McCarthy: Reassigned to AHL

McCarthy was reassigned to AHL San Jose on Monday, Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area reports. McCarthy had just been recalled Saturday, as the club was pressed for forward depth, but he'll now head back to the AHL. The winger could be in line for another promotion should the team find themselves hit by the injury bug again.

Sharks' John McCarthy: Recalled from minors Saturday

The Sharks have recalled McCarthy from AHL Barracuda. According to CSN Bay Area's Kevin Kurz, the Sharks will be without wingers Ben Smith (upper body) and Joonas Donskoi (lower body), for Saturday's contest against the Hurricanes. Enter McCarthy, a depth forward that commonly gets called up when injuries strike the parent club.

  • Sharks Ink McCarthy To Two-Way Deal

News: John McCarthy signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Sharks on Thursday, Curtis Pashelka of the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: After opening the past season with AHL Chicago in the St. Louis organization, John McCarthy finished up the campaign at AHL Worcester, where he had played the previous five years. He'll stick around with the organization that drafted him, but his middling production in the minor-league ranks likely won't put him on the cusp of a promotion.
  • Blues Reassign McCarthy

News: John McCarthy was reassigned to AHL Chicago on Friday, Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Analysis: John McCarthy was recalled from the minors just two days earlier to serve as an extra forward, but ended up being dropped from the 23-man roster after the Blues activated Carl Gunnarsson (concussion) from injured reserve Friday. The winger is strictly an organizational depth option for the Blues, as he'll likely only be called up to the parent club on a temporary basis when injuries occur.
  • Blues Recall McCarthy From AHL Chicago

News: John McCarthy was recalled from AHL Chicago on Wednesday.
Analysis: John McCarthy, who has recorded seven points over 22 games in the minors this season, will provide the Blues with offensive depth. Forward Colin Fraser was also recalled for a similar purpose.
  • Blues Cut McCarthy

News: John McCarthy was reassigned to AHL Chicago on Sunday, reports.
Analysis: John McCarthy, who appeared in 36 games for the Sharks last season, doesn't figure to see anywhere close to that amount of run with the Blues this season, should he eventually warrant an appointment to the NHL club. He'll likely remain at Chicago for the majority of the campaign, serving as little more than organizational forward depth.
  • Blues Sign McCarthy To One-Year Deal

News: John McCarthy signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Blues on Friday, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
Analysis: The deal will pay John McCarthy $600,000 at the NHL level, where he's not likely to see much duty for the forward-rich Blues. McCarthy appeared in 36 games last season for the Sharks, notching a goal and an assist while finishing with a minus-11 rating.
  • Sharks Send McCarthy to AHL Worcester On Saturday

News: John McCarthy was sent down to AHL Worcester on Saturday.
Analysis: John McCarthy netted his first goal of the season Friday, but heads to Worcester so that he can see regular ice time over the Olympic break. He will likely be recalled when play resumes.
  • McCarthy Nets First Of The Year For Sharks

News: John McCarthy tipped in a shot from linemate James Sheppard for his first goal of the season Friday against Columbus.
Analysis: John McCarthy, freshly recalled from AHL Worcester, also had five shots and played 15:44, his fourth highest total ice time of the season. McCarthy played strong Friday, but the reality is that he will be up and down from the AHL for the rest of the season, especially with at least three forwards returning from injury after the break.
  • Sharks Recall McCarthy

News: John McCarthy was recalled from AHL Worcester on Thursday, Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area reports.
Analysis: John McCarthy will be filling in for Matt Nieto (undisclosed), who will be out Friday after taking a shot off his foot in Wednesday's game. With just one point in his 35 games with the Sharks earlier this season, McCarthy shouldn't be expected to make much of a fantasy impact.
