• McBain Re-Signs With Kings

News: Jamie McBain re-signed Friday with the Kings on a one-year, two-way contract, Lisa Dillman of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Analysis: With Slava Voynov's status uncertain for 2015-16 following his jailing for domestic violence as well as an Achilles injury, Jamie McBain could have a shot at settling into a regular role on defense for the Kings. He provided better-than-expected results as a fill-in last season when injuries compromised the Kings' depth, contributing three goals and nine points in 26 games while seeing limited ice time.
  • Kings' McBain Bags Goal In Lineup Return

News: Jamie McBain bagged his third goal of the season -- and the 100th point of his career -- in Thursday's loss to the Panthers.
Analysis: Jamie McBain entered the lineup for the first time since Jan. 8, displacing Brayden McNabb. While the 26-year-old has been quietly effective in limited action with three goals and five assists in 17 games, the Kings don't seem quite willing to commit to him as a regular on defense. Perhaps the offense he provided in Thursday's defeat will lead to a multi-game stay in the lineup.
  • Kings' McBain Notches Two Assists In Win

News: Jamie McBain notched two power-play assists in Saturday's 4-2 win over the Coyotes.
Analysis: An upper-body injury to Robyn Regehr allowed Jamie McBain to reenter the lineup for the first time since Nov. 29, and he took full advantage of the opportunity. With Regehr slated to miss the next two-to-three weeks with the injury, McBain figures to see close to a regular role on defense during that time, though performances like Saturday's can't be expected with much frequency. As a third-pairing player, McBain's limited time on ice probably won't afford him consistent chances at making an offensive impact.
  • Kings Will Sign McBain

News: Jamie McBain will be signed by the Kings on Tuesday, Lisa Dillman of the LA Times reports.
Analysis: Jamie McBain's contract will reportedly be worth the league minimum, and the Kings will save cap space by waiting until Tuesday to sign him. He's expected to provide the team with blue line depth while Robyn Regehr (undisclosed) and Slava Voynov (suspension) are sidelined.
  • McBain Signs PTO With Kings Affiliate

News: Jamie McBain signed a professional tryout contract Friday with the Kings' AHL affiliate in Manchester, James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail reports.
Analysis: Jamie McBain failed to win a roster spot during with tryout with the Coyotes in training camp, so he'll attempt to earn his way back to the NHL by showcasing his abilities for the Kings at Manchester. The 26-year-old tallied 17 points and a minus-13 rating over 69 games with the Sabres last season.
  • Coyotes Release McBain From PTO

News: Jamie McBain has been released from his professional tryout offer with the Coyotes, USA Today reports.
Analysis: Jamie McBain was forced to settle for a PTO after interest was mild in the veteran blueliner during free agency. McBain was a regular skater for the Sabres last season with 69 appearances, but he'll likely struggle to find a squad desperate enough to give that much ice time in 2014-15.
  • Sabres Do Not Qualify Defenseman McBain

News: The Sabres did not make a qualifying offer to Jamie McBain on Monday, reports John Vogl of The Buffalo News.
Analysis: Without a qualifying offer, Jamie McBain becomes an unrestricted free agent. Acquired from Carolina in exchange for Andrej Sekera, McBain scored 17 points in 69 games for the Sabres. Offensively, McBain was able to give the Sabres' power play some punch but, ultimately, his overall play wasn't good enough to be part of the team's plans for the future. The Sabres have a plethora of young prospects coming up the system, and this move opens up yet another regular spot for Rasmus Ristolainen, Nikita Zadorov, Chad Ruhwedel or Jake McCabe. At 26 years old, McBain still posseses some potential and his offensive ability and right-hand shot will be in demand come July 1 when free agency begins.
  • Sabres' McBain Pots Goal In Finale

News: Jamie McBain scored his sixth goal of the season in Sunday's season finale against the Islanders.
Analysis: Jamie McBain didn't come into the 2013-14 season with a ton of fantasy appeal and did little to change that by the end of the campaign, finishing with 17 points and a minus-13 rating over 69 games. He'll head into free agency this offseason.
  • Sabres' McBain Notches Two Assists

News: Jamie McBain gathered two assists in Wednesday's 5-4 win over the Bruins.
Analysis: Jamie McBain continues to see frequent ice time for the Sabres, put his point totals (three goals, nine assists in 46 games) are still rather ordinary even by defenseman standards. Playing for the Sabres certainly doesn't help his plus/minus rating, making him a rather unattractive waiver wire pickup.
  • Sabres Scratch McBain Against Washington

News: After appearing in every single Sabres game since Nov. 30, Jamie McBain was a healthy scratch Tuesday against Washington.
Analysis: Jamie McBain was horrendous in Monday's 3-0 loss to Pittsburgh, and head coach Ted Nolan made him pay the price Tuesday by making him a healthy scratch. Acquired in a trade for Andrej Sekera, who is having a fine season in Carolina, McBain is having a relatively good season for Buffalo. He's already eclipsed last year's goal and point totals, and he's seen as a key part of the Sabres' right-side defense down the road. A good skater who provides offense for a team whose forwards have trouble scoring, it's safe to assume that he'll return to the lineup soon.
