  • Ex-Capital Wellman Signs With KHL Club

News: Casey Wellman has signed a one-year contract with Spartak Moscow of the KHL, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: The 27-year-old Casey Wellman spent all of last season with AHL Hershey in the Capitals' organization, collecting 25 goals and 29 assists across 73 games. Wellman's production has been more modest in his 54 career NHL games, and he seemed poised to settle into an organizational depth role had he elected to remain in North America. Instead, he'll presumably take on a more featured role in the KHL, which could allow him to build up his value and warrant more interest should he elect to pursue a return to the NHL next summer.
  • Caps Demote Wellman

News: Casey Wellman was sent back to AHL Hershey on Wednesday, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Casey Wellman went without a point in the three games he suited up for after his Mar. 11 recall. Chris Brown was recalled from Hershey in a corresponding move.
  • Capitals' Wellman Practices on Second Line

News: Casey Wellman centered phenom Evgeny Kuznetsov and Troy Brouwer on the team's second line during Saturday's practice, Katie Carrera of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: With Brooks Laich potentially out for Sunday's action, head coach Adam Oates moved slumping Marcus Johansson to the team's top line, opening the door for Casey Wellman to resume his NHL career centering the team's second unit. Wellman's availability hinges on Laich's ability to play on Sunday, but it's hard to recommend adding Wellman, even with the promotion, due to the inconsistent nature of Laich's injury. If Laich is out long term and Wellman is still centering Kuznetsov and Brouwer, Wellman has some appeal in deeper leagues, but keep an eye on the situation in DC.
  • Capitals Recall Wellman

News: Casey Wellman was recalled from AHL Hershey on Tuesday.
Analysis: Casey Wellman doesn't figure to see much more than fourth line or healthy scratch duty while he's up with the Capitals. The 26-year-old previously had three points in 10 games with the Capitals earlier this season.
  • Caps Reassign Wellman To Hershey

News: Casey Wellman was reassigned to AHL Hershey on Sunday, Katies Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Casey Wellman was brought up on an emergency basis Saturday, but was not needed for the game. He'll continue to go back and forth when the Capitals need depth.
  • Caps Recall Wellman From AHL Hershey

News: Casey Wellman was recalled from AHL Hershey on Saturday.
Analysis: Casey Wellman had just been sent down late last week but is needed down the Beltway once again. He has two goals and one assist over 10 games with the Caps and he is expected to arrive in D.C. before Saturday's game.
  • Capitals' Wellman Re-Assigned To AHL

News: Casey Wellman was re-assigned to AHL Hershey on Sunday.
Analysis: An emergency recall prior to Saturday's game, Casey Wellman's re-assignment comes as no surprise. The 26-year-old center has chipped in two goals and one assist in 10 games with Washington this season.
  • Caps' Wellman Recalled Saturday

News: Casey Wellman was recalled in advance of Saturday's game against the Bruins, Katie Carrera of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: He'll be up on an emergency basis for the Capitals after Martin Erat was dealing with an undisclosed injury prior to warmups and was eventually ruled out. Casey Wellman will center the Caps' second line, working alongside Marcus Johansson and Troy Brouwer.
  • Caps Recall Wellman

News: Casey Wellman was recalled from AHL Hershey on Thursday.
Analysis: With NHL teams now able to resume practicing, Casey Wellman will rejoin the Capitals to fill out their forward lines while some of their players remain in Sochi. Wellman has gathered two goals and an assist over nine games with the Capitals.
  • Capitals Assign Wellman To AHL

News: Casey Wellman has been re-assigned to the Hershey Bears, the Washington Capitals announced on Sunday.
Analysis: Casey Wellman has helped sparked a Capitals offense in need of a boost over the last few games and will get much-needed playing time during the Olympic break. If Mikail Grabovski (ankle) is not ready to go after the break's conclusion, Wellman could be in line for another stint in the NHL. He has two goals and one assist with the Caps this season.
