Coyotes' Craig Cunningham: Recalled by Coyotes on Sunday

Cunningham was recalled from AHL Springfield on Sunday, Dhiren Mahiban of The Canadian Press reports. Cunningham signed a two-way contract before the season, so frequent movement between the AHL and NHL should be expected. In 12 games at Springfield, the 25-year-old five goals and four assists.

    • Cunningham Re-Signs With Coyotes

News: Craig Cunningham re-signed Tuesday with the Coyotes on a one-year, two-way contract.
Analysis: Though the Coyotes declined to tender a qualifying offer a day earlier to Craig Cunningham, a restricted free agent, it didn't take long for the team to find common ground with the winger on a new deal. The two-way deal will allow the Coyotes to demote Cunningham to AHL Portland without having to go through the waiver process, but given the lack of existing forward talent on the parent club's current roster that might be a moot point. The 24-year-old, who has recorded seven points in 53 career NHL games, could stick with Arizona for the bulk of the season.
    • Coyotes Don't Qualify Cunningham

News: Craig Cunningham didn't receive a qualifying offer from the Coyotes, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports.
Analysis: He'll enter free agency coming off a season in which he recorded all of seven points in 51 games split between the Bruins and Coyotes. Craig Cunningham does have a pair of 40-plus-point seasons to his credit in the AHL, and at just 24 years old, the former fourth-round pick seems likely to catch on with another NHL franchise -- probably on a two-way deal.
    • Cunningham Carries Coyotes' Offense In Loss

News: Craig Cunningham scored his third goal and added an assist Tuesday in a 3-2 loss to Calgary.
Analysis: When you're relying on a no-name like Craig Cunningham to carry your offense, it's hard to expect much in the way of wins. The goal was Cunningham's first as a Coyote, and he owns just seven points in 49 games this year split between Boston and Arizona.
    • Coyotes' Cunningham Assists In Second Straight

News: Craig Cunningham recorded an assist in Thursday's 4-3 overtime win over the Sabres.
Analysis: It's the second helper in as many games for Craig Cunningham, but that shouldn't lead anyone to believe he's set to become a regular on the score sheet in the subsequent contests to come. Between stops with the Bruins and Coyotes this season, Cunningham has tallied two goals and three assists over 44 games.
    • Coyotes Claim Cunningham On Waivers

News: The Coyotes claimed Craig Cunningham on waivers from the Bruins on Monday,'s Joe Haggerty reports.
Analysis: The Bruins presumably would have preferred to send Craig Cunningham (who has three points in 32 NHL games this season) back to AHL Providence had he cleared waivers, but the 24-year-old winger was instead scooped up by Arizona, where he should be able to carve out a depth/energy forward role with his new team.
    • Bruins Place Cunningham On Waivers

News: The Bruins placed Craig Cunningham on waivers Sunday, Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: Per the report, it looks like the Bruins are setting the table for some trade deadline moves, with Craig Cunningham -- who has three points in 32 games with the B's to date -- a candidate to head to AHL Providence assuming he clears waivers.
    • First NHL Assist For Bruins' Cunningham

News: Craig Cunningham picked up the first assist of his NHL career Tuesday against the Stars.
Analysis: He had the primary assist on Greg Campbell's goal for his first helper in 24 career games (22 this year). Craig Cunningham has also chipped in a couple goals, but is a little-heralded tough guy who doesn't get many opportunities in his depth-line role.
    • Bruins Call Up Cunningham

News: Craig Cunningham was recalled from AHL Providence on Wednesday, Amalie Benjamin of the Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: With Simon Gagne on an indefinite leave of absence while his father battles terminal cancer, Craig Cunningham was called up to join the parent club. He'll likely only suit up Thursday against the Blackhawks if David Krejci (groin) is unable to play.
    • Bruins' Cunningham Sent Back To AHL Providence

News: The Bruins have reassigned Craig Cunningham to AHL Providence, Amalie Benjamin of the Boston Globe reports.
Analysis: Craig Cunningham had been called up to the Bruins to add depth to their roster during their four-game road trip. Through 18 games in the AHL this season, Cunningham has four goals and nine assists.
