    • Avs Goalie Prospect Aittokallio To Play In Finland

News: Sami Aittokallio didn't report to Avalanche training camp Thursday and has decided to play in his native Finland this season, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: The Avalanche will still retain Sami Aittokallio's rights if and when he decides to return to North America, but the 23-year-old goalie doesn't seem to figure into the organization's plans at either the NHL or AHL level. Semyon Varlamov and Reto Berra are on tap to serve as the top two goalies for the Avalanche, while Calvin Pickard and Spencer Martin are first in line to form the goalie tandem at AHL San Antonio this season.
    • Avs Re-Sign Aittokallio

News: Sami Aittokallio has re-signed with the Avalanche on a one-year, two-way contract, General Fanager reports.
Analysis: Sami Aittokallio appears to be the clear No. 4 goalie in the Colorado organization behind Semyon Varlamov, Calvin Pickard, and Reto Berra, so it's somewhat surprising he elected to commit for another year rather than bolt for Europe. Even so, Aittokallio's contract does at least include a clause for him to play overseas if he isn't guaranteed a roster spot with the Avalanche, potentially opening the door for him to leave the club if he's assigned to the AHL out of training camp, as expected.
    • Avs' Aittokallio Reassigned To AHL

News: Sami Aittokallio was reassigned to AHL Lake Erie on Wednesday.
Analysis: Semyon Varlamov (groin) has been cleared to return to action Friday against Vancouver, making Sami Aittokallio expendable. The 22-year-old Aittokallio did not see the ice during his most recent stint with the NHL club and will now rejoin Lake Erie, with whom he went 15-15-3 with a 2.65 GAA and .909 save percentage last season.
    • Avs Recall Aittokallio

News: Sami Aittokallio was recalled from AHL Lake Erie on Friday, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: The call-up of Sami Aittokallio would appear to signal that Reto Berra won't be ready to go before Saturday's game against the Canadiens, and quite possibly, even longer. With No. 1 netminder Semyon Varlamov (groin) on injured reserve through at least Oct. 24, coach Patrick Roy will likely turn to either Aittokallio or Calvin Pickard for the next two games, after both were in the minors just days earlier. Neither goalie looks like an especially attractive streaming option in the short term, especially with the 1-3-1 Avs struggling in multiple facets right now.
    • Avs Reassign Aittokallio

News: Sami Aittokallio was reassigned to AHL Lake Erie on Tuesday.
Analysis: It sounds like Jean-Sebastien Giguere's back is now feeling better, as Sami Aittokallio was only on hand to serve as the backup for the Avs. He made one appearance during his stay with the Avalanche, surrendering three goals in two periods Saturday vs. the Lightning before he was pulled.
    • Avs' Aittokallio Pulled After Two

News: Sami Aittokallio was pulled after two periods of play Saturday after yielding three goals on 18 shots against Tampa Bay.
Analysis: It was his season debut and probably one he'd like to do over. He could see some work behind Semyon Varlamov because of J.S. Giguere's chronic back issues, but he fantasy value will be limited if he keeps this kind of play up.
    • Avs Start Aittokallio On Saturday

News: Sami Aittokallio will start in net for the Avalanche when they face the Lightning on Saturday, Adrian Dater of the Denver Post reports.
Analysis: Sami Aittokallio was recalled Friday when word came down that J.S. Giguere would not be able to play due to his chronic back issues. He'll make his debut Saturday and could be in line for additional work should Giguere be out longer than expected.
    • Avs Recall Aittokallio Friday

News: Sami Aittokallio was recalled from AHL Lake Erie on Friday.
Analysis: With J.S. Giguere day-to-day with a back injury, the Avs are in need of a backup. Sami Aittokallio was 8-9-1 with a 2.48 GAA and .900 save percentage for Lake Erie.
    • Avs Reassign Aittokallio

News: Aitokallio was reassigned to AHL Lake Erie on Thursday.
Analysis: Aitokallio served as Semyon Varlamov's backup Tuesday but didn't see any action. With J.S. Giguere fully recovered from his back spasms, Aitokallio will head back to Lake Erie for more regular duty.
    • Avs Recall Aittokallio

News: Sami Aittokallio was recalled from AHL Lake Erie on Monday.
Analysis: The 21-year-old goalie wasn't able to beat out Jean-Sebastien Giguere for the backup job in training camp, but he'll now replace him in Denver with Giguere tending to back spasms. Sami Aittokallio brings a lot of promise to the table, but coach Patrick Roy will probably be reluctant to give him much playing time behind starter Semyon Varlamov.
