Blue Jackets' Cam Atkinson: Has two-day point explosion against Habs

Atkinson tallied a goal, an assist and a plus-2 rating Tuesday in a 5-2 win over Montreal. If the Habs ever see Atkinson again, it'll probably feel like it's too soon after he dropped four goals, an assist and a plus-4 rating on them in the span of two days. The diminutive winger had managed just one point in the prior six games, so the citizens of Montreal have to be wondering what they did to motivate him so impressively. Of course, this is just the latest hot stretch in what's shaping up to be easily Atkinson's best NHL season so far.

Blue Jackets' Cam Atkinson: Gets tricky with three goals Monday

Atkinson recorded his third-career hat trick en route to a 5-2 win over the visiting Canadiens on Monday. He also recorded seven shots on goal. His third of the night came on a gaping wide-open cage with the goalie pulled, but owners surely won't mind. The dimunitive winger now has 17 goals on the year and is up to 31 points, so all signs point to Atkinson besting his career highs of 22 goals and 40 assists. His 127 shots on goal have him on track for 210 over a full season, which would also come very close to his career-high 216 from 2013-14. The fact that Atkinson's showing solid growth this season -- as well as the fact that offensive cornerstone Ryan Johansen has recently departed in trade -- means that Atkinson possesses real value right now and could be an exceptional waiver-wire add down the stretch.

Blue Jackets' Cam Atkinson: Shorthanded effort not enough for Jackets

Atkinson registered a shorthanded goal in Saturday's overtime loss to Carolina. Atkinson ripped the puck from Hurricanes defenseman Justin Faulk on the point and stormed toward goalie Cam Ward for the wraparound score. That counts as the second shorty of the season for Atkinson, who plays in all different types of situations, including the man advantage, where he averages two minutes per game. The 26-year-old is on pace for 50 points this season and that's 10 more than he had in each of the past two campaigns.

Blue Jackets' Cam Atkinson: Extends point streak to four games Tuesday

Atkinson scored his 12th goal of the season in Tuesday's 4-2 loss to the Wild. He's working on a tidy four-game point streak, and Atkinson's 25 points in 40 games put him well on pace for a new career high. He seems to be thriving under coach John Tortorella, and should be a steady producer over the second half of the season.

Blue Jackets' Cam Atkinson: Scores power-play goal

Atkinson scored his first goal in four games Sunday against Florida. Atkinson tallied just his third power-play point of the season, despite averaging over two minutes per game of ice time with the extra attacker. Sunday's twine bender was the winger's fifth in his last 13 contests and his first with the man advantage since Oct. 22nd.

Blue Jackets' Cam Atkinson: Three-point night in Thursday's win

Atkinson scored a goal and added two assists in Thursday's wild 7-5 win over the Coyotes. He's now got 10 goals and 21 points in 33 games on the season, putting Atkinson well on pace to top his previous career high of 40 points.

Blue Jackets' Cam Atkinson: Scored pair of goals in loss

Atkinson netted two goals in Thursday's loss to the Jets. A strong showing from the 26-year-old, who fired five shots on goal in 17:38 of ice time. While he's got eight goals and 17 points in 29 games on the season, his two goals Thursday were his first points in six games. The streaky goal-scorer is a solid lock for 20 goals, but you have to deal with the slumps and inconsistencies that come with him.

Blue Jackets' Cam Atkinson: Extends point streak to four games Friday

Atkinson scored the overtime winner in Friday's 2-1 victory over the Penguins. He's now got a point in each of his last four games and seven of his last nine, scoring three goals with four assists over that stretch. Some multi-point efforts would be nice, but Atkinson seems to be re-establishing him chemistry with center Brandon Dubinsky, and has been rewarded with time on the second power play unit as well. With 15 points (six goals, nine assists) in 23 games, Atkinson is well on his way to setting a new career high in points while notching his third straight 20-goal campaign.

Blue Jackets' Cam Atkinson: Pots goal in loss

Atkinson scored his fifth goal of the season in Sunday's loss to the Sharks. Atkinson has now recorded a point in four of the last five games, as he's turned his season around since being a healthy scratch about a month ago. The 26-year-old ended each of the past two seasons with 40 points and is on pace to top that mark with 13 points through 21 contests.

Blue Jackets' Cam Atkinson: Streaking since healthy scratch

Atkinson scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal in Tuesday's win over New Jersey, potting his second of the year in the middle of the third period. He finished plus-2 with four shots. Since being made a healthy scratch a week prior, Atkinson's emerged with a far higher level of play, taking 11 shots and tallying points in three consecutive games. That's quite the contrast to his first six games of the year, during which he tallied three points and a minus-7 rating while taking 12 shots on goal. He may be small, but Atkinson has a high-flying offensive game and could very well see his point totals rise this year if the Blue Jackets can keep up the improved play they've shown so far under new coach John Tortorella.
