    Analysis: A summer-long drama comes to an end as the team decides to place Raphael Diaz on waivers and retain the former first-round pick Dylan McIlrath as the seventh defenseman. While most organizations would have loved to send a bruiser like McIlrath back to AHL Hartford for full-time minutes, the team was out of options. Although there is speculation team brass is actively seeking a trade and the 23-year-old's playing time could be impacted as a result, it appears the Winnipeg native will begin the season watching from the press box.

    Analysis: Making his season debut on Broadway, the former 10th overall pick (2010) wasted no time finding his way to the penalty box. After registering matching roughing penalties with Ian Cole early in the first period, the 22-year-old bruiser not only dropped the gloves with Ryan Reaves, but added a third period tripping call for good measure. Although he's not likely to contribute offensively, the penalty minutes are enticing (16 penalty minutes in three career games). Nevertheless, his stay with the club will likely consist of third pairing ice time and end with the return of Kevin Klein and/or Ryan McDonagh later this month.
