Capitals' Dmitry Orlov: Contributes two points in win

Orlov dialed in a goal and an assist in Wednesday's win over the Jets. Orlov blasted the puck past Michael Hutchinson blocker side, effectively extending his goals streak to three games. Despite the absence of Brooks Orpik (lower body), Orlov was on the ice for 15:33 -- compared to his season average of 14:16 -- and maybe his fantasy owners were expecting more ice time than that in this contest. However, Orlov is bound to earn a bigger role if he keeps playing at such a high level offensively.

Capitals' Dmitry Orlov: Nets game-winner Monday

Orlov scored the game-winning goal in Monday's 1-0 win over Edmonton. Orlov rocketed a shot through goaltender Anders Nilsson midway through the third period to give Washington all the offense they needed behind Braden Holtby's 33-save shutout. With three points in his last three games, Orlov is heating up and is worth a closer look in deep leagues.

Capitals' Dmitry Orlov: Nets dazzling goal Saturday

Orlov scored a highlight reel goal in Saturday's 7-3 blowout over Colorado An early candidate for "goal of the year", Orlov made a between the leg shot off goaltender Calvin Pickard's left shoulder, who thought he had it in his gear, only for Orlov to track the rebound behind the net for a wide wraparound goal on a wide open net. His first goal since March of 2013, Orlov now has points in back-to-back games, and is starting to pick up where he left off after missing all of last season recovering dealing with setbacks following offseason wrist surgery in June of 2014. While his ice time remains limited in a deep defense corps, the former second-round pick is showing glimpses of his talent, so don't be surprised if his role increases as the season unfolds.

Capitals D Dmitry Orlov will return to lineup Saturday

Capitals defenseman Dmitry Orlov will play in Saturday night's game against the Devils, J.J. Reagan of CSN Washington reports. This will be Orlov's first NHL action since the 2013-14 season as his long and arduous recovery from a wrist injury suffered in June of 2014 is finally drawing to a close. Paired with Nate Schmidt on the Capitals' third defensive unit, Orlov's value could rise if he sees stable work on the Capitals' power play. While he's worth a look in very deep leagues, those in standard leagues should keep an eye on him in the coming weeks.

    • Expected to play opening night

News: Dmitry Orlov survived final training-camp cuts and is expected to play on the third defensive pairing to start the season, Isabelle Khurshudyan of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: Dmitry Orlov said he is still working his way back after missing last season due to implications from a wrist injury sustained in 2014. Head coach Barry Trotz, suggesting Orlov is "still catching up in his game", is expected to begin the season with Orlov on the third pairing with Nate Schmidt. Given his lack of offensive opportunity, fantasy owners should wait and see how Orlov progresses in the first few weeks. If the injury has not damaged Orlov's booming point shot, he could work his way into some power-play time with Mike Green having departed for Detroit.
    • Orlov A Candidate For Caps' Third Pairing

News: Dmitry Orlov is a candidate to open the season as a regular member of the Capitals' third defensive pairing.
Analysis: Since making a splash with the Capitals in his NHL debut season of 2011-12 with three goals and 19 points in 60 games, Dmitry Orlov has known nothing but frustration since then. Due to the 2012-13 lockout and complications from May 2014 wrist surgery, Orlov has logged just 59 games with the Capitals in the last three years, with none of those coming last season. Now finally healthy and still just 24 years old, Orlov is a potential breakout candidate for the Capitals, who are hoping he can assume some of the offensive burden left by Mike Green's offseason departure.
    • Appearance Won't Come For Caps' Orlov

News: Dmitry Orlov (wrist) will not enter the lineup Saturday against the Rangers, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: With the Capitals having already secured a playoff spot heading into Saturday's season finale, there was some belief that Dmitry Orlov might finally get a chance to play after missing the entire season while recovering from wrist surgery. However, since the Capitals are still trying to hold off the Islanders for second place in the Metropolitan Division, it appears coach Barry Trotz will stick with his usual lineup defensively, preventing Orlov from entering the fold. Though he's now healthy, Orlov won't be eligible to play during the postseason and will have to turn his sights toward next season before suiting up again.
    • Lineup Return In Question For Caps' Orlov

News: Head coach Barry Trotz said he would like to get Dmitry Orlov (wrist) into a game, but is not certain that will happen in the Caps' remaining two regular-season games, Chuck Gormley of CSN Washington reports.
Analysis: Dmitry Orlov has been recalled to the NHL ranks after a brief conditioning assignment with AHL Hershey. Unfortunately for him, the Capitals are fully healthy on the defensive side of their roster and are hoping to secure home ice in the first round of the playoffs, so the time may not be an opportune time to play the Russian blueliner, who has missed all season recovering from a wrist injury. However, presuming he's ready to go for the start of the 2015-16 campaign, Orlov remains a sleeper candidate in deeper leagues.
    • Caps Recall Orlov

News: The Capitals recalled Dmitry Orlov (wrist) from his conditioning stint with AHL Hershey on Thursday, the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Per the report, Dmitry Orlov will return to the Capitals' long-term injury list, with Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post relaying that it's unclear if Orlov will suit up for the team prior to the end of the regular season. Orlov has yet to suit up for the Capitals this season after undergoing wrist surgery last summer.
    • Orlov May Rejoin Capitals Soon

News: Alex Prewitt of The Washington Post reports "there is a chance" that Dmitry Orlov will join the Capitals on their upcoming road trip, and he could end up making his season debut at some point during that trip.
Analysis: Dmitry Orlov has had a terrible road to recovery following offseason wrist surgery and has only recently begun playing with AHL Hershey after being sent to the minors last week. The Capitals are hoping to have Orlov at the ready for the playoff run, but given the difficulty in his recovery, it's hard to say whether Orlov will be up to the task any time soon. However, should he return to the lineup and remain healthy, it should provide some assurance that he will be ready for next season, and thus improve his draft stock for the 2015-16 season.
