Oilers' Nail Yakupov: Will miss 2-4 weeks

Yakupov will miss 2-4 weeks with an ankle sprain. His leg bent backwards when he was pulled down to the ice earlier this week, so it could be a fairly serious sprain. Teddy Purcell and Jordan Eberle will handle the bulk of the action on the right wing for now.

Oilers' Nail Yakupov: Exits Wednesday's game with injury

Yakupov has been ruled out of the rest of Wednesday's game against the Hurricanes with an undisclosed injury. Yakupov suffered the injury when a referee accidentally pulled him down to the ice, causing the 22-year-old winger to bend his leg backwards awkwardly. The severity and exact nature of the ailment remains unclear, but the Oilers should provide an update on Yakupov's status following Wednesday's tilt.

Oilers' Nail Yakupov: Making case to remain a top six forward

Yakupov is making a case that he should remain a top six forward, reports the Edmonton Sun. Yakupov may have been the Oilers best player at the end of last season and his improved play has continued over the first couple of weeks this season. Yes, he is playing with talented rookie Connor McDavid but new coach Todd McClellan believes that Yakupov is giving just as much as he's taking and has earned this opportunity. The bottom line is Yakupov is likely to remain a top six forward even when Jordan Eberle (shoulder) returns to the lineup.

Oilers' Nail Yakupov: Collects two points in win

Yakupov scored his first goal of the season and had an assist in Saturday's win over the Flames. Playing on a line with Connor McDavid definitely has it's benefits. Yakupov fired four shots on goal in the victory and looked very engaged. If the 22-year-old an stick on the second line with McDavid, the former 17-goal scorer could be an absolute fantasy steal this season. The talented Russian is due for a big bounce-back year after failing to meet expectations in the previous two seasons.

Oilers' Nail Yakupov: Moved up to second line

Yakupov was practicing on a line with Connor McDavid in practice Monday, reports Oilers web site. The trio actually started playing together about halfway through the game against Nashville on Saturday. Coach Mclellan liked it enough that he is going to give them at least another game together. Yakupov may have been the Oilers most reliable goal scorer the last two months of last season. This is a chance for him to show that he deserves to be a top six forward.

    • Remains on third line

News: Nail Yakupov will remain on the third line, reports the Edmonton Journal.
Analysis: This might catch fantasy owners a little bit by surprise as there was some thought that will Jordan Eberle (shoulder) out for at least October, Nail Yakupov would get moved up to at least the second line. Apparently not as new coach Todd McLellan doesn't want to mess with the chemistry between Yakupov and Anton Lander.
    • Oilers' Yakupov Out For Worlds Due To Hip Injury

News: Nail Yakupov is dealing with a hip injury and will not compete for Russia during the World Championships in May, Jack Michaels of Oilers Radio Network reports.
Analysis: After meeting with the Oilers' training staff for an end-of-the-season checkup, Nail Yakupov was diagnosed with bilateral hip injuries that will require him to take some time off the ice to rehab. The team doesn't seem too concerned about the injuries limiting Yakupov's availability for the start of the 2015-16 season, as he was signed to a two-year, $5 million contract extension two days earlier.
    • Oilers Extend Yakupov

News: The Oilers have signed Nail Yakupov to a two-year contract extension, with a reported average annual value of $2.5 million, the Edmonton Sun reports.
Analysis: The 21-year-old -- who was the first pick overall in the 2012 NHL Draft -- is coming off a season in which he recorded a career-high 33 points (including 14 goals) in 81 games. While his extension won't necessarily keep him with the Oilers for the long haul, Nail Yakupov will at least have a couple more seasons in which to continue to develop with the team's young core, which also currently includes the likes of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Jordan Eberle, Taylor Hall and Justin Schultz.
    • Oilers' Yakupov Gets Unassisted Tally In Loss

News: Nail Yakupov netted an unassisted goal in Thursday's 3-1 loss to the Sharks.
Analysis: Nail Yakupov took advantage of a Justin Braun turnover to find twine for his 13th tally. The winger took a minus-1 rating for the night to drop him to an ugly minus-35 for the season, but his inspired play since the beginning of February has offered something of a silver lining. While more was expected from the former No. 1 overall draft pick at this stage of his career, Yakupov has shown signs of putting it together with 20 points over his last 30 contests. He could be a breakout candidate in 2015-16, when he'll be just 22 years old.
    • Oilers' Yakupov Picks Up Assist In Victory

News: Nail Yakupov registered an assist in Wednesday's win over the Avalanche.
Analysis: Nail Yakupov is back on the fantasy radar with four points in the past five games, but one cannot ignore that he's at minus-33 for the second consecutive season. The Oilers have the third youngest team in the NHL with an average player age of 26.293, and Yakupov is five years younger than that, so he has plenty of room to mature on both ends of the ice.
