    Senators' Chris Neil: Quiet start

Neil has been noticeably quiet in the first two games of the regular season. The veteran winger has zero points and only 16:56 seconds of ice-time total.Neil continues to hang onto to the Senators roster by a thread. Neil is valued for giving extra rest to the top three lines by remaining strong on the puck and limiting turnovers. Neil currently has a zero plus/minus rating.

  • Sens' Neil "Banged Up"

News: Chris Neil was held out of practice Monday, as he was "banged up," Steve Lloyd of TSN 1200 reports.
Analysis: It appears to be more of just a general maintenance day rather than a serious setback. Chris Neil figures to return to his role as a bottom-six forward when healthy, and could be back in time for Tuesday's preseason contest against the Jets.
  • Senators' Neil Out Of Lineup Friday

News: Chris Neil will be replaced by Alex Chiasson in the lineup for Friday's Game 5 against the Canadiens.
Analysis: Chiasson skated on the fourth line for the first two games of the series, while Chris Neil got the nod for Games 3 and 4. The Sens will go back to Chiasson for Game 5, but we could still see Neil again this postseason, if Ottawa manages to stave off elimination.
  • Sens' Neil Cleared To Play

News: Chris Neil (thumb) has been cleared to play during the postseason, Wayne Scanlan of the Ottawa Citizen reports.
Analysis: Chris Neil was activated from injured reserve in the final week of the regular season, but didn't enter the lineup in any of the Senators' three games. It seems likely that coach Dave Cameron was reluctant to break up a lineup that has been on fire since the All-Star break, and ultimately earned the Senators an improbable playoff berth with a win over the Flyers over the weekend. Neil will remain out of the lineup for Game 1 of the Sens' first-round playoff series against the Canadiens, but should Cameron determine at some point that the team needs of a more agitating presence in the bottom six, the winger's number would likely be called.
  • Sens' Neil Out For Regular-Season Finale

News: Chris Neil (thumb) will not play in Saturday's regular-season finale against the Flyers, Gord Wilson of TSN 1200 reports.
Analysis: Chris Neil was activated from injured reserve earlier this week after a long absence due to the thumb injury, but with the Senators still fighting for a wild-card spot, coach Dave Cameron hasn't had an opportunity to break the winger back into the lineup. The physical bottom-six forward's next opportunity to play wouldn't come until the playoffs, should the Senators qualify.
  • Sens Activate Neil From IR

News: Chris Neil (thumb) was activated from injured reserve ahead of Tuesday's game against the Penguins.
Analysis: Chris Neil isn't playing in Tuesday's game, but his return to the lineup could come in one of the Sens' final two games of the regular season. The tough winger has been out since Valentine's Day, when he fractured his thumb in a win over the Oilers.
  • Sens' Neil Cleared For Contact

News: Coach Dave Cameron said Thursday that Chris Neil (thumb) has been Cleared for contact.
Analysis: Chris Neil has been out since mid-February with the fractured thumb, so he'll require several practices with the team before a return to the lineup will be considered. He could be ready to go at some point during the final week of the season, but with the Senators clawing for a playoff spot, Cameron might be reluctant to change his lineup over the final couple of games.
  • Sens' Neil Still Wearing Cast

News: Chris Neil is still wearing a cast on his surgically repaired left thumb, Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun reports.
Analysis: The Senators projected Chris Neil to miss 4-to-5 weeks after he underwent surgery Feb. 19, but it appears likely that his absence will extend beyond that timetable. While the Senators remain hopeful Neil will be back before the end of the season, it may be too late for fantasy owners to reap much benefit from him. Thanks to his lousy scoring numbers, Neil is largely a two-category play (hits and PIM) in most formats.
  • Sens' Neil Out 4-5 Weeks After Thumb Surgery

News: Chris Neil underwent surgery on his left thumb Thursday and is projected to miss 4-to-5 weeks, Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun reports.
Analysis: The Senators initially pegged Chris Neil to miss 3-to-4 weeks due to the injury, but his timetable will be pushed back an extra week at the recommendation of doctors, who inserted a plate in the thumb. Neil will don a cast for the next two weeks before being reevaluated. Given the length of his timetable and with the Senators wrapping up their schedule in early April, it's possible Neil could be shut down for the season if he doesn't progress as quickly as anticipated.
  • Sens' Neil Placed On IR

News: Chris Neil (thumb) was placed on injured reserve Tuesday.
Analysis: Chris Neil is set to miss the next 3-to-4 weeks with the fractured thumb. The Senators will likely use his roster spot to recall an extra forward as necessary.
