  • Skoula traded again Wednesday

News: TSN.ca reports that the Maple Leafs have traded D Martin Skoula, acquired on Tuesday from the Penguins in the Alexei Ponikarovsky deal, to the Devils. Toronto gets a fifth-round pick in return.
Analysis: Skoula has been a healthy scratch more often than not this season, although he had played at least 78 games in each of his previous nine campaigns, so maybe he'll find some room on the depth chart in New Jersey. Continue to ignore him all formats for now.
  • Ponikarovsky to Pens for Caputi, Skoula

News: The Penguins picked up LW Alexei Ponikarovsky from the Maple Leafs on Tuesday in exchange for LW Luca Caputi and D Martin Skoula.
Analysis: Ponikarovsky played almost nine seasons with the Maple Leafs, putting up 257 points in 477 games, with his best season coming in 2008-09 when he managed 61 points. He is likely to end up on the second line with Evgeni Malkin and Ruslan Fedotenko, so the 29-year-old Ukrainian could see a nice little boost in value, especially if he also ends up on the power play. His current owners should certainly think about playing him in Fantasy Week 21 (March 8-14), but keep an eye on the lines from Pittsburgh's next couple of games. Skoula was a healthy scratch more often than not in Pittsburgh this season, although he had played at least 78 games in each of his previous nine campaigns, so maybe he'll find some room on the depth chart in Toronto. Continue to ignore him all formats for now. Caputi is a 21-year-old prospect who has only played in nine career NHL games. The former fourth-round pick has shown some promise in the AHL however, so might be worth keeping an eye on in long-term keeper leagues.
  • Skoula doesn't dress vs. former team

News: Former Wild player on the Penguins, D Martin Skoula, was scratched on Monday against his former team. He has missed the last two games as a healthy scratch.
Analysis: Skoula saw his most playing action in November and parts of December when the Penguins' blue line was banged up. But he has spent most of his time in the press box when everyone has been healthy. Keep Skoula out of Fantasy lineups until further notice.
  • Skoula has first two-goal game

News: Penguins D Martin Skoula scored two goals -- one in each of the first two periods -- as Pittsburgh held off the Thrashers in a 3-2 victory. "It had never happened for me before. I got lucky. It went in twice," Skoula said.
Analysis: Skoula has just five points this season and remains just a low-end Fantasy defenseman in super-deep leagues.
  • Skoula nets first 2009-10 goal

News: Penguins D Martin Skoula scored a goal and finished at even during Monday's game against the Ducks. Skoula scored his first of the season early in the third, with rookie defenseman Ben Lovejay getting an assist for his second career point.
Analysis: Skoula's playing time has increased the last few weeks since the Penguins' blue line has been devastated by injury. He has four points in 12 games this season and is starting to look like the 20-30-point threat from the past. Still, Skoula has low-end Fantasy appeal.
  • Skoula makes Pittsburgh debut

News: D Martin Skoula made his season debut for the Penguins on Friday against the Panthers in place of Sergei Gonchar, who is out 4-6 weeks with a broken wrist. Skoula had no points and a plus-1 rating in 17:02 of ice time.
Analysis: Skoula used to be a consistent 20-point threat early in his career, but then he landed in Minnesota and his offense tanked since the Wild were a defensive team. The Gonchar injury will open up regular PT for Skoula, but he still has low-end Fantasy appeal since he likely won't come near Gonchar's production.
  • Penguins sign Skoula

News: The Penguins have signed D Martin Skoula to a one-year contract.
Analysis: Skoula spent the last 3 1/2 seasons with the Wild, and totaled four goals and 16 points in 81 games last season. He will be merely be a low-end Fantasy flier with Pittsburgh.
  • Skoula lands tryout with Jackets

News: The Sports Xchange reports D Martin Skoula joined Blue Jackets training camp on Friday on a tryout agreement. He was released from a similar agreement with the Florida Panthers, playing in four preseason games.
Analysis: Where does Skoula fit on the Blue Jackets blue line? It's hard to say, but the Blue Jackets are desperate for a depth defenseman, and Skoula will get a chance to help on the power play. Skoula has spent the last 3 1/2 seasons with the Wild. He totaled four goals and 16 points in 81 games last season. However, if he makes the squad, he is going to merely be a low-end Fantasy flier.
  • Panthers invite Skoula to camp

News: The Sun Sentinel reports the Panthers have invited free agent defensemen Martin Skoula and Christian Backman to training camp. Neither player has signed a contract, but both will be in camp when it opens Sunday.
Analysis: Skoula has spent the last 3 1/2 seasons with the Wild. He totaled four goals and 16 points in 81 games last season. The Panthers need some depth on their blue line and Skoula is a great candidate with 10 seasons of NHL experience. However, if he makes the squad, he is going to merely be a low-end Fantasy flier.
  • Skoula has two goals in three games

News: Wild D Martin Skoula scored a goal and finished at plus-3 during Sunday's game against the Oilers. Minnesota made it 2-0 at 8;52 of the first period when Skoula's shot from the point skittered between Dwayne Roloson's legs. He has two of his three goals in the last three games.
Analysis: Skoula has nine points in his last 27 games and it has been his most productive offensive stretch of the season. He is a top-logging defenseman for the Wild, but since Minnesota has plenty of offensive-defenseman, Skoula is asked to focus on the defensive end. Consider him best used in Fantasy leagues that reward heavily for short-handed stats.
