Nashville Predators' Seth Jones Assists twice on Opening Night

Jones collected two assists -- one on the power play -- in Thursday's Opening Night victory against the Hurricanes. He helped out on both Nashville goals in the game while playing a surprising 21:04 -- that's only 40 seconds less than Roman Josi. Jones' minutes may not always be that high, but he should see a consistent share of power-play time, and that combined with his pedigree as the No. 4 overall pick in 2013 makes the 21-year-old an appealing fantasy option, particularly in deeper formats.

Sunday's goal was his first since Feb. 10, and he hasn't made up for it in the assist category with only four helpers in his 24 games since that time. Keep him parked on the bench or send him to the waiver wire in season-long formats.

Analysis: Just when Seth Jones seemed to be finally tapping into the potential that made him a prime dynasty-league target upon being drafted fourth overall in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, he's hit a slump that unsurprisingly coincided with the Preds' six-game losing streak. Prior to collecting an assist in Monday's win, Jones had failed to attempt a shot in any of the team's previous four games. Park the blueliner on the bench for now, but don't give up hope on him running into another hot streak before the season ends.

While he's been a letdown fantasy-wise this season, Seth Jones is putting together a decent campaign for Nashville, sitting 15th among all NHL defenseman with a plus-12 rating. Jones is picking things up, though. After a rough stretch in mid-November to mid-December with only three points in 18 games, Jones now has points in back-to-back games and has three goals and seven points in his last 12 games. Considering he could hit 30 points and is averaging 18:02 of ice time with the top team in the NHL, the youngster is worth looking at in some deeper leagues.
