Penguins' Adam Clendening: Takes advantage of chance Tuesday

Clendening suited up for just his second game of the season Tuesday and earned an assist against the Wild. The blueliner served as a healthy scratch for the last month but played well in his first opportunity since Oct. 15. With fellow defender Olli Maatta likely on the shelf for a while, Clendening could work his way into regular playing time.

    • Nets a shortie from behind the goal Tuesday

News: Adam Clendening scored a bad-angled, short-handed goal Tuesday against the Lightning.
Analysis: He hasn't played particularly poorly in his own end, something a number of blueliners in Pittsburgh can't say thus far in camp. Adam Clendening has shown he can move the puck -- a key attribute in the Pens' system -- and for that reason he could stick around for Opening Night.
    • Canucks Deal Clendening To Pittsburgh

News: Adam Clendening was traded to the Penguins on Tuesday.
Analysis: The Canucks have agreed to send Adam Clendening, Nick Bonino and a 2016 second-round pick to Pittsburgh in exchange for Brandon Sutter and a conditional third-round pick. Clendening, 22, is coming off a season in which he appeared in 21 total NHL games -- 17 for the Canucks and four for the Blackhawks. The 2011 second-round pick cumulatively tallied one goal and three assists.
    • Clendening Re-Signs With Canucks

News: Adam Clendening signed a one-year (two-way) contract with the Canucks on Friday that will pay him $760,000 at the NHL level, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
Analysis: Adam Clendening played a total of 21 games at the NHL level last season, tallying a total of four points over that span. He will compete with Matt Bartkowski and Frank Corrado for the final spot in the Canucks' top-six defender group in training camp. If he is unable to lock up that role in the preseason, he will be one of the first players Vancouver turns to in case of injury or poor performance.
    • Canucks Reassign Clendening To Minors

News: Adam Clendening was reassigned to AHL Utica on Wednesday, Irfaan Gaffar of Sportsnet reports.
Analysis: Adam Clendening has been a healthy scratch for the Canucks' last several games with the team returning blueliners Kevin Bieksa (hand), Alex Edler (upper body), and Chris Tanev (concussion) from injury. With no opening in the lineup forthcoming, the Canucks determined Clendening would be better off playing regularly in the minors.
    • Canucks' Clendening To Debut Sunday

News: Adam Clendening will make his Canucks debut Sunday against the Wild, Elliott Pap of the Vancouver Sun reports.
Analysis: The Canucks were motivated to acquire the young blueliner from the Blackhawks after Kevin Bieksa (hand) was ruled out for six to eight weeks. Adam Clendening will immediately assume a spot on the club's third pairing, joining Luca Sbisa. While he won't eat up all of Bieksa's 21:16 average TOI, Clendening should slot in on the second power-play unit, displacing Yannick Weber. The rearguard lacks much experience at the NHL level, but did show a dash of offensive potential during his four-game stint with the Blackhawks earlier in the season, tallying a goal and an assist.
    • Canucks' Clendening Recalled From AHL

News: Adam Clendening was recalled from AHL Rockford on Friday, the Canucks' official website reports.
Analysis: One day after being traded from the Blackhawks to the Canucks, Adam Clendening will join the NHL roster. The 22-year-old defenseman has two points in four NHL appearances this season, with another 13 points in 38 AHL games.
    • Hawks' Ship Clendening To Canucks

News: Adam Clendening was traded to the Canucks on Thursday.
Analysis: Adam Clendening has played in just four games for the Blackhawks this season, recording a goal and an assist in his brief stint. Most of his season has been spent at AHL Rockford, where he has 12 assists and one goal in 38 games. The 22-year-old will be shipped to Vancouver, where he could find his way to the roster at some point this season.
    • Blackhawks Send Down Clendening

News: Adam Clendening was reassigned to AHL Rockford after Wednesday's game against the Blues, ESPN Chicago reports.
Analysis: Adam Clendening had been a healthy scratch over the Blackhawks' last three games, so the decision to send him down likely comes with the motive of giving him more ice time in the minors. Klas Dahlbeck was recalled from Rockford to take his place on the 23-man roster.
    • Hawks' Clendening Adds Assist To Resume

News: Adam Clendening made it two points in two games in the NHL as he contributed an assist in the 7-1 victory over the Oilers on Saturday.
Analysis: Adam Clendening assisted on a Marian Hossa second period goal. He scored a goal in his debut on Thursday against the Flames. In addition his ice minutes increase from a little below 11 minutes on Thursday to almost 20 minutes against the Oilers on Saturday. It probably helped that the game was out of control early on allowing Hawks' coach Joel Quenneville to play as many players as he wanted to preserve the top players. Clendening was called up earlier this week after Trevor van Riemsdyk landed on the injury reserve with a leg injury.
