Hurricanes' Joakim Nordstrom: Signs extension Friday

Nordstrom signed a two-year, $2.55 million extension Friday, tying him to the club through the 2017-18 season. After getting inconsistent looks in the Blackhawks' bottom-six forward group in 2013-14 and 2014-15, it seems that Nordstrom has found a home in Carolina. The 24-year-old came into 2015-16 with just one goal and six points in his 54-game NHL career, but finished the season with 10 goals and 24 points in 71 games. Don't expect Nordstrom to become a 30-goal scorer, but he has the potential to grab around 20 goals per season as his career progresses.

Hurricanes' Joakim Nordstrom: Facing offseason wrist surgery

Nordstrom will undergo offseason surgery on his wrist, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports. Nordstrom missed some time earlier in the season to a lower-body injury, but there was nothing to suggest he was dealing with a bad wrist, so it's likely the injury is minor in nature. The upcoming procedure is not expected to affect Nordstrom's availability once training camps open in September.

    Hurricanes' Joakim Nordstrom: Struggling offensively

Nordstrom went pointless for the sixth consecutive game during Saturday's 5-1 loss to the Blue Jackets. Apart from a terrific four-week stretch back in February that saw him score 11 points in 13 games, Nordstrom has had a pretty forgettable campaign this season. He continues to skate on the Canes' first line alongside Jordan Staal and Elias Lindholm, but the unit hasn't been generating much offense lately. We don't recommend using him down the stretch, unless you are completely out of options.

Hurricanes' Joakim Nordstrom: Adds helper in loss to Senators

Nordstrom recorded his eighth point in his last 10 games with an assist in Thursday's 4-2 loss to the Senators. Nordstrom is starting to blossom into more than just the third-line, checking-type winger he was expected to be following two seasons of part-time duty in Chicago. Now in his first full season with Carolina, Nordstrom has 17 points in 47 games, and has a good shot at hitting the 25-point plateau given his current pace. Lately, he's been seeing anywhere from 15-17 minutes per game playing on the second line with Jordan Staal and Andrej Nestrasil, which is good enough for modest fantasy value in deeper formats.

Hurricanes' Joakim Nordstrom: Two helpers in win over Jets

Nordstrom collected a pair of helpers in Friday's win over the Jets, giving him five points in his last five games. Nordstrom is now up to 14 points on the season and is looking like a decent short-term play, skating with Jordan Staal and Andrej Nestrasil on the Canes' second line. His fantasy value is on the upswing, but it's still pretty much confined to deeper formats.

Hurricanes' Joakim Nordstrom: Goal scoring streak continues against Hawks

Nordstrom scored a goal for the third consecutive game Tuesday against the Blackhawks, giving him a career-high 12 points in 40 games so far this season. It's been feast or famine with Nordstrom this year, as he had just a single assist in his previous 10 games prior to his current hot streak. We wouldn't expect this run to last too much longer, but take advantage while you can. He continues to offer pretty decent fantasy value playing on the Canes' second line alongside Jordan Staal and Elias Lindholm.

Hurricanes' Joakim Nordstrom: Goal and assist snap seven-game point drought

Nordstrom had a goal and an assist Saturday in a win over the Devils. The points snapped a seven-game drought. Nordstrom has been skating with Jordan Staal and Brett Pesce on the Canes' "checking line" and the trio play big and heavy hockey. Nordstrom could deliver some low-level fantasy value if this line sticks together.

Hurricanes' Joakim Nordstrom: Posts assist in loss to Rangers

Nordstrom recorded an assist in Monday's 4-3 loss to the Rangers, his third point in 10 games since being recalled from AHL Milwaukee in early November. Nordstrom started out seeing roughly 10-12 minutes in a bottom-six role upon his arrival in Nashville. Lately, however, he's been skating on the second line with Jordan Staal and Andrej Nestrasil, and his ice time has risen to the 14-15 minute mark. He currently offers only modest fantasy value in deeper formats.

Hurricanes' Joakim Nordstrom: Posts first point of season in loss to Wild

Nordstrom recorded his first point of the season - an assist - during Thursday's 3-2 OT loss to the Wild, his second game back after missing nine games with a lower-body injury. After the game, coach Bill Peters said he liked what he saw from Nordstrom, especially his speed. "I thought Nordstrom coming back gave us more speed, more tempo," Peters said. "So wherever I play him he seems to be quick and on it, on the forecheck and hunting pucks. We seem a little quicker with him in the lineup." Nordstrom still doesn't boast much fantasy value in most formats, but given the favourable comments from his coach, his spot in the lineup looks to be secure for the time being, even if he's seeing only 10-11 minutes per night on the third line.

Hurricanes' Joakim Nordstrom: Recalled from AHL Nordstrom

Nordstrom was recalled from AHL Nordstrom on Sunday. Nordstrom was down with the AHL club on a conditioning stint, but that has come to a close as the Hurricanes are convinced he's now healthy. His first chance to rejoin the lineup will come Tuesday against the Rangers.
