Red Wings' Xavier Ouellet: Signs extension

Ouellet signed a one-year extension with the Red Wings on Monday. Ouellet split time between the AHL and NHL last season, logging three points in 21 games with the parent club, but has been used exclusively in the AHL thus far this year. He's still just 22 years old though, so he could get the chance to fill in on the blueline should the Red Wings find themselves in need of defensive help.

Detroit Redwings' Xavier Ouellet Assigned to AHL on Thursday

Ouellet was assigned to AHL Grand Rapids on Thursday, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports. Ouellet was expected to open the season as the Wings' sixth defenseman, but with Alexey Marchenko and Jakub Kindl both returning from injury Thursday, there was no longer a spot for the 22-year-old in the Wings' crowded defensive corps. Ouellet will likely return to the big club at some point this season, but for now, he'll be suiting up for AHL Grand Rapids for the foreseeable future.

    • To start season on third D pairing

News: Xavier Ouellet will start the season on the third defensive pairing with Brendan Smith, the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Xavier Ouellet played solid hockey for both the Grand Rapids Griffins and Red Wings last season, and has been rewarded for his efforts. He will likely become the seventh defenseman, however, when Danny DeKeyser returns from injury in a few weeks.
    • Wings' Ouellet Expected To Play Monday

News: Xavier Ouellet (upper body) is expected to play in Monday's preseason game against the Bruins, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Outellet practiced fully each of the past two days, so it's not a huge surprise that he's expected to retake the ice for Monday's contest. He'll now battle for a roster spot out of camp, but it seems likely he'll wind up back in the AHL at least to begin the season.
    • Wings Reassign Ouellet

News: Xavier Ouellet was reassigned to AHL Grand Rapids on Saturday.
Analysis: Recalled Saturday morning with Brendan Smith was battling an arm injury, Xavier Ouellet stuck around with the Red Wings for only a few hours. Smith, who was considered a game-time decision for Saturday's contest, ended up being able to play, making Ouellet's services unneeded. Expect Ouellet to return to the Red Wings again this season the next time an injury strikes on the blue line.
    • Wings Recall Ouellet From AHL Grand Rapids

News: Xavier Ouellet was recalled from AHL Grand Rapids on Saturday, MLive.com's Ansar Khan reports.
Analysis: With Brendan Smith nursing a sore arm and Kyle Quincey still recovering from an ankle injury, Xavier Ouellet will be on hand as insurance on defense. In the event Smith is formally ruled out prior to Saturday's game against the Predators, Ouellet would likely draw in on the Red Wings' third defensive pairing. During his stay with the big club earlier this season, Ouellet generated two goals and an assist over 21 games.

News: Xavier Ouellet was reassigned to AHL Grand Rapids on Sunday, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Xavier Ouellet was recalled Wednesday, to provide depth for the Red Wings on their road trip. The team has one left on the road (Wednesday), but the blueliner will likely not join the team in Pittsburgh.
    • WIngs Recall Defenseman Ouellet

News: Xavier Ouellet was recalled from AHL Grand Rapids on Wednesday.
Analysis: Xavier Ouellet was demoted less than a week ago, but his stint in the AHL proved to be brief. He'll once again provide Detroit with short term depth on defense.
    • Red Wings Send Ouellet To Minors

News: Xavier Ouellet was reassigned to AHL Grand Rapids on Friday, Chuck Pleiness of the Macomb Daily reports.
Analysis: It was expected that the Red Wings' placement of Brian Lashoff on waivers Friday would lock Xavier Ouellet into a roster spot the rest of the season; instead, he'll be bound for a trip back to Grand Rapids. GM Ken Holland suggested that the team simply demoted Ouellet in order to get a look at AHL blueliner AHL Alexey Marchenko over the weekend, so it doesn't appear a permanent stay in the minors is in store. Ouellet could be back with the Red Wings as soon as next week.
    • Wings' Ouellet Set To Stay In Detroit

News: With the waiving of Brian Lashoff, Xavier Ouellet is now set to remain with the Red Wings for the rest of the season, Ansar Khan of MLive reports.
Analysis: Xavier Ouellet had a rough outing Thursday with a minus-3, but has still been a decent third-line defender for Detroit. He has two goals and an assist as well as a plus-7 in 20 games in the big leagues this season.
