Winnipeg Jets' Nicolas Petan Scores in NHL debut
Petan scored his first career goal on a deflection in his first career game Thursday on Opening Night in Boston.A star in junior hockey with the WHL's Portland Winterhawks, Petan comes to the NHL at age 20 with a boatload of long-term upside. That said, near-term expectations should be tempered, as Petan skated just 10 minutes on the fourth line for Winnipeg in the opener. It's not going to be easy for him to move up the ranks at left wing unless the Jets suffer some injuries.
Making case for spot on NHL rosterNews: Nicolas Petan is making a strong case for a roster spot with the Jets, the Winnipeg Sun reports. Analysis: Coach Paul Maurice hasn't come out yet and said that Nicolas Petan has a spot on the roster, but the superbly skilled Petan -- who Maurice said is "a power-play guy" who has "real good awareness" and is "solid defensively" -- has stood out in the preseason. This is the undersized Petan's first professional campaign after he racked up 322 points in 188 regular-season games over his last three junior seasons, not to mention 28 points in 17 playoff games. At 20 years old, he may be best served in a top-six role in the AHL to continue his development, but Petan is showing some polish already and could be a contributor on the power play even with a fourth-line spot in Winnipeg.
