    • Devils' Kovalchuk Retires

News: Ilya Kovalchuk has announced that he will retire.
Analysis: The 30-year-old winger shocked the entire NHL on Thursday when he announced he will forego the final 12 years of his contract with the Devils and hang up the skates. Ilya Kovalchuk was due to make $11.3 million next season, but after a disappointing 2013 campaign in which the Devils failed to make the playoffs, it looks like Kovalchuk is done with the NHL, at least for now.
    • Kovalchuk Set To Join KHL Squad

News: The same day he announced his retirement, Ilya Kovalchuk reached agreement on a contract with St. Petersburg SKA of the KHL, Yahoo! Sports reports.
Analysis: It's a bit surprising that Ilya Kovalchuk would leave the NHL with nearly 12 years and $77 million on the table, but he's always had a strong desire to play in his native Russia. During the lockout this past season, Kovalchuk expressed a preference to remain in the KHL even after the NHL and NHLPA came to an agreement on a shortened season, before eventually relenting and joining the Devils. Kovalchuk's contract is now fully voided, so if he has a change of tune and elects to return stateside, he'd have to settle for a much less lucrative payday.
    • Devils' Kovalchuk Grabs Two Points

News: Ilya Kovalchuk scored a goal and added an assist in Thursday's win over Pittsburgh, giving him points in three straight games.
Analysis: After missing nearly a month with a shoulder injury, Kovy's got four points in as many games since returning. It's good to see he didn't miss a step -- promising for next year.
    • Devils' Kovalchuk (Shoulder) Makes It Through Saturday's Game

News: Ilya Kovalchuk (shoulder) made it through Saturday's game without incident, the Bergen Record's Tom Gulitti reports.
Analysis: Ilya Kovalchuk did not tally a point and finished with a minus-1 rating in a game his team won 6-2, but the more important thing is that his shoulder held up. The Devils still have a shot to make the playoffs, if only because they play the Rangers twice in their final four games. Expect Kovalchuk to suit up for Sunday's must-win contest against the aforementioned Rangers.
    • Devils' Kovalchuk To Return To Ice Saturday

News: Ilya Kovalchuk (shoulder) is expected to play Saturday, the Bergen Record reports.
Analysis: Ilya Kovalchuk has not played since March 23. Kovalchuk hoped to return earlier this week but was held out until now. His injured shoulder should be healthy.
    • Devils' Kovalchuk Could Play Saturday

News: Ilya Kovalchuk (shoulder) feels "much better" and could play this weekend, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.
Analysis: Ilya Kovalchuk injured his shouler back on Mar. 23 and has not played since. He did not make the trip to Philadelphia with the team for Thursday's game and remains listed as day-to-day. Kovalchuk has recorded 10 goals and 17 assists on the season for the Devils.
    • Devils' Kovalchuk Not Ready Yet

News: Ilya Kovalchuk (shoulder) won't travel to Philadelphia, where the Devils play Thursday. "He's not close enough to be a consideration, so we're going to leave him back," coach Pete DeBoer noted Wednesday.
Analysis: As a result, Ilya Kovalchuk's next shot at suiting up for the Devils will be Saturday's home game against the Panthers.
    • Devils' Kovalchuk Day-To-Day

News: Ilya Kovalchuk (right shoulder) remains day-to-day, the Record's Tom Gulitti reports.
Analysis: The plan continues to be for Ilya Kovalchuk to practice Wednesday, with a return to the lineup possible for the right winger as soon as Thursday against Philadelphia.
    • Devils' Kovalchuk Nears Return

News: Ilya Kovalchuk (right shoulder) could play as soon as Thursday night against the Flyers, the Star-Ledger reports.
Analysis: The Devils are 0-5-4 in their last nine games with Ilya Kovalchuk out, so his return would clearly be a welcome one, as the team's stretch run approaches.
    • Devils' Kovalchuk Out Monday

News: Ilya Kovalchuk (shoulder) won't play in Monday's game against the Maple Leafs, the Record reports.
Analysis: Though coach Pete DeBoer said that Ilya Kovalchuk is still "moving in a positive direction," the right winger isn't quite ready to play and will miss his 10th game in a row on Monday.
