Analysis: With Marc Staal set to miss the opening two games of the year, it looked like Brendan Bell had a chance to remain with the Rangers for the short term. This move combined with Stu Bickel also being placed on waivers leaves the Rangers with only five healthy defensemen, including Michael Sauer (shoulder). Expect a veteran signing or trade before the season officially begins.

Analysis: Brendan Bell has always had good offensive skills for a defensemen but he's shown enough improvement on the defensive side to stick with the Rangers', to start the year. In all likelihood when Marc Staal returns and Michael Sauer is completely healthy, that either Bell or Stu Bickel will be demoted. Bell has little fantasy value but if he stay with the team, it's possible he could work his way into some second unit power-play time.
  • Brendan Bell Eyes Roster Spot With Rangers

News: Signed by the Rangers in August to a one year deal, Brendan Bell has played 101 NHL games with Toronto, Phoenix and Ottawa according to Newsday
Analysis: Brendan Bell has shown some offensive ability from the backline with 21 points in 53 gamed in 2008-2009 for Ottawa. He hasn't shown the defensive consistency to stick in the NHL. He said playing in Europe re-ignited his passion for the game and gave him time to reflect on his game. Bell is competing for one of two defensemen roster spots with Michael Del Zotto, Tim Erixon, Pavel Valentenko and Tomas Kundratek. He enter camp clearly behind all the named defensemen, however the Rangers still need a power-play defensemen. If Bell can show coach John Tortorella he's not a defensive liability, he could push hard for a roster spot.

The Newfoundland native played seven games for the Chicago Blackhawks in 2008-09. 26-year-old Bell has four goals and 13 assists with the AHL's Peoria Rivermen so far this campaign. The 6'1, 205-pound blueliner was a third-round pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. Kana, 22, has six assists in 11 games with the Alaska Aces of the ECHL. None of these players have any Fantasy value right now.
  • Bell assigned to Peoria (AHL)

Analysis: We were a little perplexed when Bell chose to sign with the Blues in the offseason since they had a pretty established blue line. Now, Bell has to live with his decision as he opens the year in the minors. Bell has some decent offensive skills, but still remains more of a low-end Fantasy option when up in the NHL.
