• Misses preseason game with groin injury

News: Ron Hainsey missed Tuesday's preseason game against the Capitals with a lower-body injury, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Analysis: No word yet on the severity of the injury, but with the Canes' season opener against the Predators just a week away, it certainly puts Ron Hainsey's availability for that game squarely in doubt. The 34-year-old defenseman's fantasy value is already limited to deeper formats, but this gives fantasy owners yet another reason to avoid him. Draft with caution.
  • Carolina's Hainsey Picks Up Assist

News: Ron Hainsey assisted on Jordan Staal's third-period goal in Thursday's win over the Flyers.
Analysis: As has been the case for the last several seasons, Ron Hainsey has been a non-factor offensively for much of 2014-15. With only 10 points and a minus-14 rating over 80 games this season, Hainsey won't have much hope of regaining fantasy relevance over the remainder of his career.
  • Canes' Hainsey Enduring Scoring Slump

News: Ron Hainsey went pointless in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to Columbus, however he finished the game with two PIM, four shots on goal, four blocked shots and a hit.
Analysis: With just eight points in 64 games, Ron Hainsey is on track for the lowest offensive totals of his career. However, he does show reasonably well in the aforementioned secondary stat categories for those in deep formats that reward them.
  • Hurricanes' Hainsey To Play Saturday

News: Ron Hainsey (illness) will play Saturday against the Wild.
Analysis: Ron Hainsey was back on the ice at the Hurricanes' morning skate Saturday, showing no effects from the flu bug he had dealt with a day earlier. He'll skate next to Michal Jordan on the Hurricanes' third defensive pairing.
  • Canes' Hainsey Dealing With Illness

News: Ron Hainsey may miss Saturday's game in Minnesota due to flu-like symptoms, Michael Smith of the Hurricanes' official website reports.
Analysis: Ron Hainsey has not been ruled out, as he'll still have a full 24 hours to recover for Saturday's game. If he can't give it a go, the Canes will likely recall a defenseman from AHL Charlotte.
  • Rare Assist For Canes' Hainsey

News: Ron Hainsey posted a rare assist in Thursday's 2-1 shootout win over the Coyotes. It was just his sixth point of the season and first in 10 games.
Analysis: The 33-year-old Ron Hainsey is really more of a shutdown defender at this stage of his career. He currently ranks second on the team in blocked shots (81) and fourth in shorthanded ice time per game (2:06). As such, his fantasy value in most standard formats remains extremely limited.
  • Canes' Hainsey Supplying Defense, Not Offense

News: Ron Hainsey went plus-3 in Monday's 4-1 win over Toronto, but failed to record a point for the fifth consecutive game. He now has just five points in 45 games so far this season.
Analysis: Ron Hainsey is a great example of a player who's worth more to his real-life NHL team than to fantasy owners. He doesn't provide much offense, but takes care of business in his own end by blocking shots (second on the team with 74) and killing penalties (fourth in shorthanded ice time per game with 2:08). Overall, Hainsey is a workhorse who rarely needs a night off, which is why the 'Canes keep him around. Sadly, however, these attributes carry little weight in the fantasy world, which is why you should avoid using him if possible.
  • Hainsey Gets On Board For 'Canes

News: Ron Hainsey potted his first goal of the season -- and Carolina's lone regulation tally -- in Tuesday's 2-1 shootout win over the Devils.
Analysis: Ron Hainsey isn't known for his scoring, that's for sure; in fact, before scoring four goals last year, he'd gone without one in two consecutive campaigns. With only four points to show for 33 games on the year, Hainsey's meager fantasy value is tied to his somewhat above-average hit and block totals, but his minus-9 rating is damaging to even that limited allure.
  • Canes' Hainsey Posts Assist Versus Maple Leafs

News: Ron Hainsey recorded his third point of the season - an assist on Elias Lindholm's empty-net goal - to help seal a 4-1 win over the Maple Leafs on Friday.
Analysis: Ron Hainsey's days as a blueliner who can contribute offensively are long gone - the last time he recorded more than 20 points in a season was back in 2009-10 when he posted five goals and 21 helpers for the Jets. These days, the best the 33-year old Hainsey can do is take care of business in his own zone. He does currently rank second on the team in blocked shots with 50, but his plus-minus rating of -9 leaves something to be desired. Bottom line, Hainsey's shortcomings far outweigh his positive attributes. For fantasy purposes, it's best to avoid using him if possible.
  • Hainsey Blocking Plenty Of Shots For Hurricanes

News: Ron Hainsey has just a single assist in 13 games so far this season, but leads the Hurricanes in blocked shots with 25.
Analysis: Ron Hainsey's offensive game has been on the decline for several years now, having not cracked the 20-point barrier since the 2009-10 season with Winnipeg. However, he still brings a solid defensive game, which makes him much more valuable to the Canes than it does to fantasy owners. Overall, not much fantasy value here, unless you are in a very deep league that counts the "BKS" stat category.
