  • Ex-Buffalo Forward Konopka Signs With Polish Team

News: Zenon Konopka has signed a contract with KH Sanok of Poland, the Toronto Sun reports.
Analysis: Zenon Konopka failed to land an NHL contract during the offseason with the specter of a 20-game ban for violating the league's performance-enhancing substances program hanging over his head. Even if he hadn't run afoul of league rules, Konopka likely wouldn't have generated much interest due to his minimal offensive production over 346 career games. It's possible he stays overseas for the remainder of his career.
  • Sabres' Konopka Suspended For DHEA Use

News: Zenon Konopka was suspended 20 games by the NHL on Thursday for violating the league's performance-enhancing substances program, which has been revealed to be DHEA, reports TSN's James Duthie.
Analysis: DHEA is dehydroepiandrosterone, a type of steroid hormone, and banned from athletic use in the United States. It was recommended to Zenon Konopka as a supplement by non-team doctors. Konopka, who will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, will serve his 20-game suspension when he signs his new contract.
  • Sabres' Konopka Gets 20-Game Ban

News: Zenon Konopka was suspended for 20 games after violating the NHL's performance-enhancing substances program, Chris Botta of the New York Times reports.
Analysis: Zenon Konopka has accepted the suspension, which will go into effect when he signs a new contract. The veteran center's future with the Sabres was unclear at the end of the season because the team is going through a re-build. Konopka's value on the free agent market takes a hit as teams won't be able to play him for the first 20 games. The NHL will not comment any further on the matter and there has been no indication of what kind of performance-enhancing drugs Konopka has taken.
  • Sabres' Konopka Returns For Finale

News: Zenon Konopka (back) returned to the ice for Sunday's season finale against the Islanders. He only saw 8:58 of ice time, while also spending five minutes in the penalty box.
Analysis: It's good to see Zenon Konopka seemingly healthy heading into the offseason after he missed the Sabres' previous 10 games due to injury. He never made that much of an impact with either the Wild or the Sabres this season, totaling just three points in 59 games. It remains to be seen whether Buffalo will bring him back next season as fourth-line depth.
  • Sabres' Konopka Out Thursday

News: Zenon Konopka (back) won't be available Thursday against the Predators.
Analysis: Zenon Konopka was unable to practice Wednesday, prompting his being ruled out for a second straight game. With a couple other forwards also banged up, the Sabres may look to recall a skater or two from their minor league ranks before Thursday's contest.
  • Sabres' Konopka Ruled Out Tuesday

News: Zenon Konopka suffered a back injury Monday and will not play Tuesday against the Canadiens.
Analysis: Zenon Konopka apparently tweaked his back during the Sabres' flight from Vancouver to Montreal and was unable to participate in morning skate. The injury doesn't sound too serious, making a return to the lineup Thursday against the Predators a possibility. Ville Leino will fill in for Konopka on Tuesday.
  • Sabres' Konopka To Return Friday

News: Zenon Konopka (finger) will play Friday against the Sharks.
Analysis: Zenon Konopka underwent finger surgery during the Olympic break and was not quite ready to play in the Sabres' last game Wednesday, but he will take the ice Friday night, in place of John Scott.
  • Sabres' Konopka Out With Injury

News: Zenon Konopka (finger) will be out of the lineup Wednesday vs. the Bruins.
Analysis: Zenon Konopka indicated during morning skate that he was fine to play Wednesday, but the team trainers evidently weren't as confident in the health of his injured pinkie finger. He'll join the injured Tyler Ennis in the press box for the Sabres.
  • Sabres' Konopka Ready To Return

News: Zenon Konopka (finger) will be in the lineup Wednesday against the Bruins, Bill Hoppe of the Times Herald reports.
Analysis: Zenon Konopka underwent surgery to repair his injured pinky over the Olympic break, and it looks like the decision won't end up costing him any games. He suffered the injury while playing with Minnesota, and didn't get a chance to get it looked at until recently. The center has a goal and two assists in 49 games this season, but has also chipped in 73 PIM. Despite being a fourth-line player, there's been some interest in the trade market for his faceoff abilities. Fantasy-wise, he offers a little in peripheral stats, but generally considered waiver wire fodder.
  • Sabres' Konopka Recoveing From Finger Surgery

News: Zenon Konopka underwent finger surgery over the Olympic break and should be viewed as day-to-day, TSN's Darren Dreger reports.
Analysis: Zenon Konopka will be in the press box for Tuesday's game vs. the Hurricanes as a result, but the forward is expected to be 100 percent healthy before the Mar. 5 trade deadline. The Sabres will likely keep him out of the lineup until then as they search for a suitor in need for toughness on the fourth line.
